Ratings Report: “Millionaire” Hits Top, Most Others Seasonally Drop, Some GSN Ratings Flop

It's time for another holiday week of syndicated ratings! That means some lower-than-usual numbers in a few cases and a surprisingly large bump in another. These ratings are for the week beginning December 24th, 2012, making it the last set of ratings entirely resting in 2012. Wheel of Fortune kicks the report off as usual, checks in with another tumble. The spinner lost 600,000 viewers and six-tenths of a point, going to a 6.7 household rating. Jeopardy! falls similarly, losing 500,000 viewers with 9.3 million viewers checking in and losing half of a ratings point, sliding down to a 5.9 rating. Click here to read reports for other shows, including good news for Millionaire, numbers for Family Feud and figures for GSN's original series and final holiday marathons.

Reminder: GSN Holiday Marathons Begin This Afternoon Thumbnail

Reminder: GSN Holiday Marathons Begin This Afternoon

Last month, we received some pretty advance notice on the marathon programming GSN was scheduling to air around the holiday season. We now know what exactly will be airing during each block, plus one extra day of programming has been added since then, as GSN's viewership cow will be milked once more again on the day after Christmas, Boxing Day, the first day of Kwanzaa, whichever day you prefer to label it. The special programming will start later today at 3PM ET, with GSN's biggest hit The American Bible Challenge re-airing its first tournament. And of course, later in the week is GSN's biggest gift to traditional fans with their Match Game Merry-thon. The marathons will rest for a few days, but pick up again with a classic/contemporary Pyramid bonanza until the New Year's ball hits its base in Times Square. Click here o see what programs will be airing when and to see what will be contained with each stretch of shows.

GSN Mixes Classics With Modern Hits for Christmas & New Year’s Marathons Thumbnail

GSN Mixes Classics With Modern Hits for Christmas & New Year’s Marathons

UPDATE: As asked by some of you, as has been recent holiday tradition over the last couple of years, GSN will indeed be also airing select episodes of What's My Line? and I've Got a Secret, starting December 17th. The beloved programs from the 1950s and 1960s will air weeknights at 2AM and 2:30AM ET. The duration is not yet known, but if previous patterns are followed, expect it to be for no more than two weeks.

We've previously discussed what GSN has in store for its viewers for the upcoming Thanksgiving marathons next week on the network. They are already preparing for the even-bigger portion of the holiday season, announcing five days worth of marathons highlighting seven different programs for Christmas week and New Year's Eve and Day. The festivities will begin on Sunday, December 23rd. Beginning at 3PM ET and running all the way until midnight, all nine episodes of the first season of The American Bible Challenge will air in order. Of course, this is a gigantic ratings winner for GSN so any excuse they can find to bring it back out is expected and frankly, smart. Click here to read about what the network has planned for Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!

This Week in UK Game Shows Thumbnail

This Week in UK Game Shows

It has been an eventful seven days over the pond in the UK. This week had the second week of Deal or No Deal live with all games being broadcast live on Channel 4. There have also been straight faces and and high risks The Chase. First we have Sunday's Deal or No Deal Live which featured contestant Kevin. The live shows are played the same as the recorded shows with some differences. The box openers are a mixture of friends and family for that player and former contestants from past shows. With some who played their show as far back as 2006. The live specials also had special guests who opened their box. Namely, McFly's Tom Fletcher and Harry Potter star Oliver Phelps. Since the show is done live, a clock is used to indicate how much tim

“Deal or No Deal” Goes Live Starting Tomorrow on Channel 4 Thumbnail

“Deal or No Deal” Goes Live Starting Tomorrow on Channel 4

We've got a quick alert for all our British friends and those who have the chance to watch the show: Channel 4's Deal or No Deal has a pretty interesting and exciting stunt starting on Monday.  The Noel Edmonds hosted show will go live for two weeks starting Monday, October 10th, at 4:00PM UK.  Contestants have been chosen from their homes, completely unaware they are about to be chosen.  They'll be in the studio playing the game live, battling the Banker to become the fifth £250,000 winner.  It'll be interesting to see how the show goes in a live format.  The show is heavily edited so it should be something.  Be sure to check it out.  If anything interesting happens we'll let you know.  Click here to see a trailer for the live shows.

Weekend Replay: £250,000 on the Line on “Deal or No Deal”

I said this with BBC's QI not too long ago and it fits with this as well: few shows go with our sarcastically titled series "The British are Better Than Us" than Channel 4's Deal or No Deal.  It's amazing how they consistently get it right.  This past week featured and incredibly compelling game with contestant Tegen, a cancer survivor.  I could keep discussing it, but it's best if you just watch.  Spoilers are going to be after the break, so be warned.  I had to include her introduction so you can be properly introduced to her.  Click here to watch this exciting game.  You don't want to miss it.

Weekend Replay: Exciting Finish to Aussie “Deal or No Deal” Thumbnail

Weekend Replay: Exciting Finish to Aussie “Deal or No Deal”

Right as I say we haven't been covering Australia for some time we manage to get two clips.  This comes courtesy of our contributor Mike Klauss, so thanks for the instant message from him.  Their daily version of Deal or No Deal has been going strong since 2004.  It's taken a hit due to competitor Millionaire: Hot Seat, but it's still on and still offering up to $200,000 a day to lucky contestants.  As opposed to the more serious and dramatic tone of the British version, the Australian version offers a lighthearted, fun, and energetic half hour.  It's easily comparable to the American syndicated edition.  This past Tuesday featured an exciting game.  As we join the game the board features $50, $3,000; and the top two of $100,000 and $200,000.  Can the contestant go all the way and become the fourth top prize winner in the show's history?  Click here to find out.

Better Than Us: British “Deal or No Deal” is Leaving Me Speechless Thumbnail

Better Than Us: British “Deal or No Deal” is Leaving Me Speechless

I don't know what's going on with the British version of Deal or No Deal recently.  First they have Suzanne and the record breaking way she wins the £250,000.  Then we have yesterday's contestant, Rob, who had possibly one of the most heart breaking moments in game show history.  And today we have contestant Kerry-Anne who has a few record breaking moments of her own.  This game leaves me speechless.  I've never seen anyone as gutsy as her play.  Take a look at the moment by clicking here. You do not want to miss this.

The Most Uncomfortable Game Show Moment Ever? Thumbnail

The Most Uncomfortable Game Show Moment Ever?

Deal or No Deal produced a moment this afternoon that I had a long, long debate on whether we should show it or not.  I think if it's not the most uncomfortable moment in game show history, then it's in the top two or three.  Today's contestant is Rob, a shop assistant.  Through his time in the Dream Factory we learn he has a disability but it has only made him more dedicated to succeed.  Take a look at what happens.  It borders on nearly unbearable to watch, and there's not a remote exaggeration.  Click to watch.  You've been warned.
