Video: Check Game Returns to “The Price is Right”

A long-benched pricing game on CBS’s daytime game show The Price is Right has made its return.  The popular pricing game “Check Game” has made its return.  Its last playing was May 2009.  The game got a relatively minor face lift to fit high definition, but the rules have largely remained the same.  A prize is presented.  Contestants need to write a check to cash and if the value of the prize plus the value of the check equal between $7,000 and $8,000; they win it all.  If they don’t get it, though, they do receive a big novelty voided check.

Take a look at the first playing of the decade.  Happy to see it back?  What other pricing games would you like to see return?

For a Halloween special, I wanna see all the games played to be games that have “died” over the years like Penny Ante or the ones based on card games.

  • Anon says:

    Rise from the grave… yah!

iufb 1 – check game (only 1 revival so far)
    iufb 2 – easy as 1-2-3
    iufb 3 – golden road

    iufb 4 – Penny Ante
    iufb 5 – Hurdles
    iufb 6 – Professor Price

    • Julia says:

Uh…They still play Golden Road. It’s just very rare because the final prize is usually very expensive and it takes a while to set up and take down.

      • Well, they might play Golden Road on Friday. I think they’re winding down the current season, because they’ve announced that they’ll be re-airing the kids’ episode for this coming Monday. But I have a feeling they’re gonna close out the season with something SPECTACULAR.

        • Kaos says:

Actually, the season is already over. What they are showing are the episodes that have been preempted due to news, Presidential statements, or other important matters. These are commonly known as “make-goods”

          • Jay says:

Won’t they do a 4th of July special like they’ve done in recent years?

          • Bobby says:

Yes, they will be doing an Independence Day special. One positive aspect of the late start in Season 36 (2007-08) was that the season ended in mid-July, and CBS was able to run an Independence Day episode. The success led to it becoming in Season 38 a permanent part of the schedule. “Freedom Price” will include military families this year.

    • J.C. says:

Easy as 123 is still played.

Bring Back CARD GAME i missed The Price is Right Pricing Game

  • Schmolik says:

    Hit Me.

  • DENo1MatchGameFan says:

Give or Keep was always my favorite – at least you still kept the three prizes regardless of whether or not you won the big prize.

  • Patrick says:

I loved Penny Ante for some reason. Maybe because the game had the same sound effect from the wheel in The Joker’s Wild. I agree with Vincent on bringing back retired pricing games for a Halloween special. Have each game all beat up looking, kinda zombie like. Like Professor Price as a zombie and the little owl on the clock as a skeleton, and other games where the lights barely works and the game’s name is basically hanging on by a thread. I would really love to see that

    • Kaos says:

CBS’s Double Dare (The Alex Trebek version, not the gunge-fest on Nickelodeon) had that sound effect first, when opening an isolation booth.

      • Andrew L. Budny says:

They also used it on Break The Bank 85 with Gene Rayburn and Joe Farago during the bank card reveals in the prize vault.

  • J.C. says:

As much fun as a Halloween special would be, Professor Price should just stay dead.

  • Andrew says:

Buy or Sell, Credit Card, On The Spot, Superball, Super Saver, and Time is Money.

  • wayne says:

I like the dead game halloween idea, but if they’re going to do that, then I say bring back Cullen style bidding, and bring back the original sideways wheel.

  • Scott says:

I miss the funny episodes with the Check Game in the past, where Bob Barker had one heck of a time explaining the rules to some of the contestants.

  • Geptherigon says:

Who even writes checks anymore? This game was retired for good reason it’s nigh obsolete.

  • HomerJay says:

  • Glenn says:

on check game they sped it up a bit but love new set except big honkin check lacks a write out line now lol just seems that they are gearing it to become a quickie…unlike squeeze play this doesnt lend itself to speed play lol

on other games to bring back…HURDLES Superball and Penny Ante…drew seems to like more complex games so these make sense

  • Tony DuMont says:

If they’re bringing back the check game they should have the players write out the amount.

And why not Super Ball, or Penny Ante?

    • Andrew L. Budny says:

That was the one thing I was disappointed about when they brought this back. They should make then write out the amount of the check. That’s what you do in the real world.

  • Justin says:

The Check Game is highly complex. And let’s face it pass the buck has no.purpose.

  • Jay says:

How much you wanna bet contestants will get confused all over again? All the prop people have to do is add a “+” and an “=” to the board. That way, it becomes a LOT easier to explain. Like myself, many people are visual. So, if they see those symbols, they may “get it” better. On another note, writing it out took more time than was needed. You already knew what the check amount was. Plus, that’s not the real check. If it was, where would you put it?

On the older games…I loved Card Game and Hit Me…and what about the Poker Game. IMO, they need to come back.

  • Keith b says:

card game is still on the active list

  • Keith b says:

for bring back games hurdles broke down ALOT that’s why it was retired I want to see superb all return with either big prize being cash or trip hit me was fun on he nose was fun

  • Adam says:

I don’t get it. Credit Card is retired, but this piece of junk is out retirement? What gives?

  • Nick says:

I want to see Penny Ante, Super Saver, Give or Keep, and Super Ball come out of retirement. They were all good games, some just needed new props built for them. I’m glad Check Game is back. Now there are more one prize games in the rotation.

I would bring back The Phone Home Game and Time Is Money. The Phone Home Game has 7 Grocery Items, the most grocery items allowed in the modern TPIR era. Instead of a corded telephone, maybe a cell phone or Skype would work for the game. For Time Is Money, the time limit should be :20 seconds and the contestant can keep either the $500 voucher or give up the voucher for another :20 seconds. I would definately see Phone Home Game, Time Is Money and Buy or Sell and maybe Add Em Up out of retirement.
