Farewell to Meredith Vieira: Day One
It’s a pretty big week for fans of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. This is the final week of new episodes hosted by current host Meredith Vieira. Meredith has given away tens of millions of dollars to thousands of contestants over eleven years. We’ve repeated it over and over but her contribution to the enduring popularity of the format, and the success of the show around the world, cannot be understated. A host can make or break a show and there are few better than her. As we close Meredith’s chapter (and the second chapter in the story of US Millionaire) we’re very excited to turn the page and start chapter three with new host Cedric the Entertainer coming this September. I think we’ll all learn to love him as much as we do Meredith. However, all week, we want to celebrate Meredith. We asked you for some of your favorite Millionaire moments hosted by her and we’ll be showcasing them all week. Before then, though, let’s start with the beginning.
We’re going back even further than her first hosted episode. In 2001, one year prior to taking over the host for Regis Philbin in daytime, Meredith Vieira actually played a celebrity version of the ABC primetime edition. If you don’t remember, let’s take a look back. She does very well. People who have complained about the most common prize, or the de facto top prize today, will get a kick out of what she ends up walking away with. Tomorrow we’ll start showcasing moments from the syndicated version, so stay tuned.
