Civilians Play for £1,000,000 on ITV’s “Millionaire: The People Play” Starting May 7th

Most of the year, whenever Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? returns to ITV, celebrities sit in the Hot Seat.  However, starting tonight, civilians are back facing Chris Tarrant and attempt to win £1,000,000 for themselves.  For three special shows beginning tonight, May 7th, ITV is bringing back Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?: The People Play at 9:00PM UK (4:00PM ET).

People from all across the United Kingdom will compete to be the first million pound winner since September 2006.  Contestants will get four Lifelines along the way, but can they hold their nerve against the big bad clock and take home a giant payday?  Last year’s People Play editions were extremely memorable.  If you watched it, it’s hard to forget Dawn Harkins’s run to £75,000.  We’ll see if anyone can beat that tonight at 9:00PM UK (4:00PM ET) on ITV.

People in the Hot Seat aren’t the only ones able to play, though.  You, watching from home, can compete and see how you’d fare against the stack of questions.  Viewers can play along live on their tablet or smartphone as people in the studio try their luck.  This is only a free-to-play play-along app.  Click here to download and get involved.  Here’s a trailer for the show.  Excited for the special editions?  I know I am.

would love this to record a decent audience of 4-5m. However i fear they will be no big winners and no big audience

The endless celeb specials killed Millionaire – and sadly last years “civilian” specials didn’t rate as high as the celeb editions. I still think the best option for Millionaire would be to adapt the Hotseat format and record loads of 30 minute episodes to slot in the schedule as and when required.

I think the Millionaire format should turn to a 30 minute multiplayer game that works like the facebook game. Start with a 15 minute qualifier, end with the winner playing a final four or five questions. If the winner falls on a question, bring back 2nd place to continue for a lesser prize – or something to that extent.

No Hot Seat format!!! That is arguably the WORST format of Millionaire out there!

Having watched this episode live on Tuesday, I was a bit underwhelmed. Maybe it’s my upbringing on US Millionaire and the UK version has always been this way, but the show focussed more on the contestants than it did the game.

I found that chatting at milestones and after commercial breaks made a great balance between game show and talk show, but to chat up the contestant after every question seriously slowed down the pace of the game.
