Confirmed: Cedric the Entertainer Named New Host of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

We’ve got another big news confirmation this morning.  Disney-ABC Domestic Television has confirmed that popular comedian and film and television actor Cedric “The Entertainer” has been named the new host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.  Cedric will join the show’s 12th season this upcoming Fall.  The previous eleven seasons were hosted by Meredith Vieira who retired from the long-running syndicated quizzer in January.

“I’m truly looking forward to hosting Millionaire,” Cedric stated. “The show is a modern day game show GIANT, and the team at Disney-ABC has been great at putting the right elements together over 11 seasons.  I’m excited to entertain all those who watch and play as season 12 launches … It’s going to be a good time every day!!”

“We are thrilled to announce that Cedric ‘The Entertainer’ will be at the helm as our new host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire,” said Janice Marinelli, president, Disney-ABC Domestic Television.  “With his deep roots as a successful stand-up comedian and actor, Cedric will bring his fresh approach and unpredictable fun to the show.”

“Cedric ‘The Entertainer’ is the perfect person to take the Millionaire franchise to the next level,” added Vicki Dummer, executive vice president, Times Square Studios. “An immensely talented performer with widespread appeal, Cedric will no doubt infuse his gregarious personality and humor into the show.”

Congratulations to Cedric.  We look forward to seeing how he does.  And for those who are quick to rush to judgement…how about we wait and see how he does first?  Or at least wait until he gets some episodes under his belt.

The ratings will go down and the show will get cancelled in no time.

  • Mike says:

Does this mean the show will move to California, or will it still be produced in New York?

I know some people will think Cedric will be totally inappropriate for the show but I think he could be a welcome breath of fresh air. The problem I had with Maradith was she was really stiff as a host for years and it wasn’t until the last couple when some charm started to come out. You won’t have that problem with Cedric. Also I think some people on here fear that he’ll be the next Steve Harvey and if you ever seen there comedy stylings they are quite different. Also some posts on message boards fear that his comedy will be inappropriate at points considering it’s a high stakes game show which I find to be unfounded. Also he was alright on that “it’s Worth What?”. Just give the guy a chance.

I’ll reserve judgment until I see an actual episode with Cedric, but my preliminary impression is that it’s too far a shift in style for the show. This is mostly because I was happy with the show the way it has been presented all along, and didn’t think it needed much of a shake-up. But we’ll see.

I agree with you, but noone expected Family Feud to take off the way it did. So as you said we’ll wait & see. Who knows things could be fantastic.

HATED Meredith Viera hosting. Can’t wait to see Cedric the Entertainer host. Now if they’ll just get some people who can win the bloody million, perhaps they can climb the ratings ladder.

  • Scott says:

This will be the shows last season. Cedric will be too schticky. This show is not Family Feud where comedy has it’s place. This is (or is supposed to be) a serious game show. Cedric will put the last nail in the coffin on a show I have loved for years. Sad. Very sad.

Why don’t all of you just wait until Cedric’s Millionaire begins airing, and wait until after a few episodes pass and decide how he is?

  • TDS says:

    This cannot end well.

Now, I have never been much of a fan of Vieira’s hosting and pretty much stopped watching after Regis left, but Cedric seems like he’d come on too strong. Fortunately, the clock is gone, which will allow him to be himself.

The final nail in the coffin for this show will be the question writing more than anything else. The first round questions are usually pretty reasonable, but the round 2 questions are always something incredibly stupid like “How many grains of sand are in an hourglass?” or “What did Garfield say in the second panel of his 143rd comic strip?” or something incredibly stupid that no one could possibly know.

Someone needs to get ahold of the writers and make them realize that part of the fun of watching a quiz show is playing along. Difficult questions are great, but not the crap they’re putting up. There’s a difference between “hard” difficult and “stupid” difficult. They should get people who actually play trivia as a hobby, or who have experience with this sort of question writing, because I seriously don’t think the people there do.

A reasonably difficult would be something like “How many stars are on Tuvalu’s flag?”, “What planet has winds with the highest velocity?”, “Who was the first US president to have a veto overridden?”, “Which two Kings in a deck of cards are referred to as “Kissing Kings?”", “What was the name of the library in which Ray Bradbury wrote Farenheit 451?”

All of these questions are gonna be pretty damned hard for most people, but they’re reasonable. The shit the the Millionaire writers are churning out makes my stomach cringe.
