Video: GSN Previews a Round of “The Pyramid”

It’s pretty safe to say that GSN’s upcoming revival of The Pyramid has been one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated game shows.  Hosted by Mike Richards, the classic format originally hosted by the late Dick Clark begins Monday, September 3rd, at 6:00PM ET.  GSN has had a good amount of success in this slot, successfully launching Catch 21 and The Newlywed Game to the top of the network’s ratings here.  It’s looking like a pretty decent chance that this will do the same.  This weekend GSN posted a short clip of one round of play.  In this clip we see Chandra Wilson from ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy try to get a percent 7 score and earn the contestant another $5,000 for his Winner’s Circle jackpot.  You’ll get a preview of the graphics, the game, and Mike.

Are you any more excited after seeing this clip?

I hope with the clip indication that they are using that Pyramid theme! Very exciting and that set, thats the right kind of modernization in addition to keeping the spirit of the show intact…let’s hope it remains this way!

    • Kevin $ says:

According to the original article posted here, the theme WILL be the original!

      • Myke25 says:

At the risk of being anal about this, the original theme, “Tuning Up”, was used in the 70s versions (a far superior mix of the song, IMO). This is the 80s remix they are using.

        I’ll un-pucker now, :-)

        • Mike says:

I agree, Mike- 100% !!!! It appears we are in the minority. But I always felt the original “Tuning Up” had a perfect rhythm and melody for the explosion when somebody won in the Winner’s Circle !

          • Andy G. says:

Im with both of you. While I’m very happy they are using a Pyramid theme, I would have preferred the “Tuning Up” version. I will get over it though. On another note, not a fan of the tone with each second of the clock, on the front game. In the Pyramid Bonus round ? Absolutely !!!. In the front game is overkill IMO.

          • Jay says:

I also think the original (70′s) version is the best. But, I have to admit that the 80′s version is the one more closely associated (pun intented) with the popularity of the show. Today’s generation (for the most part) doesn’t remember the 70′s version…which imo is a shame.

        • Jay Temple says:

I’ve long felt that “Tuning Up” was a better tune for intro and outro, but the 80′s version was better for celebrating a win in the Winner’s Circle. (I also like “Tuning Up” just as an instrumental on its own.)

  • BG says:

Pretty spiffy! I love that they “reincarnated” the digital clock from the 80s…the desk LED changing colors after a round is also a nice touch.

I don’t have cable, but does GSN put their shows online? I could see myself watching this on a regular basis.

  • Marc Power says:

the tension music is unnecessary but it works. everything else seems just fine.

  • Jay Temple says:

The flute clock* seems unnecessary in the main game, but having it there and in the Winner’s Circle, is certainly an improvement over not having it at all (Donnymid).

*Is that the technical name for it, or just an apt description someone made up?

  • All the more reason I’m looking forward to this. Most of the things I saw in the Million Dollar Pyramid Pilot clip I saw some time ago were in this.

  • anonymous says:

Since “mini skirt” comes up after “Snooki,” that means that they DIDN’T get all seven. Also, I watched this clip on their site before the weekend; just felt like you should know that it’s been up longer than the weekend.

    So excited for the show!

    • MikeSant318 says:

So…Commercials, Miniskirt, Snooki – Things that can be annoying?
(Wrong – how could a miniskirt be annoying?)

      • Marc says:

“Things that are short” sounds closer to the truth.

        • bmhedgehog says:

Marc’s right. Commercials are 2.2 mins long (as Chuck Woolery has always said “Be back in 2 and 2.”) Miniskirts are short and so is Snooki’s Career (I honestly don’t think she is short in terms in height, cause I know there are people out there, famous or otherwise, are shorter than Snooki).

          • Steve says:

my DVR would like to have a word with you. It’s more like three minutes these days, unless I’m watching “World’s Worst Tenants”. In that case, it’s five, but I get one less break than usual.

  • The Dragon says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing more clips, but this does not change my mind that in fact I will be watching this.

  • Randy says:

This excites you? I think you can learn a lot from what GSN releases to you. They gave you early looks at Late Night Liars and the Drew Carey improv show. Neither was funny and it was obvious that both shows would fail. Now they show you a clip of Pyramid and people get excited over the sound effects and music? Remember, this is GSN we’re dealing with.

    • Sam says:

Yes, Randy, Pyramid is just like an unfunny improv comic’s attempt at another Whose Line? that would obviously fail and an unfunny puppet panel with a slow-moving main game that would get old quick.

It doesn’t help GSN if they are essentially lying about what music and sound effects are in the show.

    • Kevin $ says:

      Easy differences…

The preview clips for those didn’t seem like they’d be good on GSN at all. This clip looks like a solid clip of normal gameplay that will be good on GSN.

With that said, it 100% makes me (and most) excited!

    • ten96lt says:

Why is LNL being bashed here. I actually enjoyed it while it lasted. Yes I think there were some parts that could use tweaks, but I thought the overall format was decent and I enjoyed watching it.

      • Mike B. says:

Why shouldn’t we be excited for this? All of the pictures, clips, descriptions, and set reports we’ve seen have indicated that GSN got this right. The only thing that slightly concerns me is how well the celebrities will play.

As for Late Night Liars, I agree that it wasn’t all that bad, though it did feel a bit too scripted. But I guess the world wasn’t ready for a raunchy panel show with puppets.

  • Kevin $ says:

    ’80s/’90s TV fans:

Does Mike Richards remind anyone else of Mark Paul Gosselar (not playing Zack Morris, but being himself) in this clip? I feel like he’d have the exact same mannerisms. Genuinely.

  • Alex Davis says:

For whatever it’s worth I still think Late Night Liars was very funny and a lot of fun, just on the wrong network.

  • Myke25 says:

Not sure about the bible show or the cooking show. Though they are both technically game shows, they both look like shows that belong on other networks. One could argue that half of Food Network’s line-up consists of cooking competition shows that could be spun as game shows. The car sales reality show definitely belongs on another network.

But everything I’ve seen on The Pyramid looks solid. If all of us on this site watch it or DVR it religiously (pardon the pun, American Bible Challenge), not only could it be the best GSN original since the days of Chuck’s Lingo and Russian Roulette, we could send no clearer message to the GSN brass that THIS is what we want to see on a game show network…not reality shows.

Sony really needs to run some Pyramid promos during Wheel and Jeopardy. With GSN relegated to digital tiers on many cable systems, they’ll need all the outside promotion they can get. You can’t just promote on your own air anymore.

    • Jay says:

I agree with the need for more promos. Weren’t there GSN promos on WoF and J! during the early years of the “Game Show Network”? IMO, they should come back…maybe not every night… but, often.

  • The Banker's Nephew says:

Looks great to me, save for the fact that they have 16. That doesn’t bode well for the show.

    • Jay says:

While I’ll agree that 16 isn’t a great score compared to the 21-21 ties we’re so used to, let me remind you that this is a new crop of players (both celeb and contestant). So, the learning curve is probably back. Besides, this is one clip of one round of one episode…of which there are many more to be seen. I’m sure there will be many instances of higher scores.

    • BG says:

Early Clark episodes were pretty low-scoring too, as was “Donnymid”, all things considered. The one advantage here is that celebs play for the full week, so this could very well be a Monday or Tuesday episode.

  • John Moss says:

For some reason, the video isn’t showing up for me. All my plugins are up to date…

  • I really like your blog.. very nice colors &
theme. Did you create this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you?
