“Family Feud” and Burger King Team for “Family Food” Promotion; Can “Feud” Challenge “Jeopardy!”?
For a very, very long time Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! have been sitting pretty as the number one and number two game shows in the country and high atop the syndicated television ratings. Is Family Feud about to challenge Jeopardy! to be the number two game show? Experts are believing it has the strong potential of going to a mid 4.0 to 5.0 rating, if not higher, for the 2012-2013 season. Why? The show’s re-branding to a more Match Game-style game and Steve Harvey’s unbelievably quick wit have helped significantly. However, this season’s improved time slots, new double-run markets, and a big promotion with Burger King mean that there’s a chance Alex Trebek may want to watch his back. Steve Harvey is hot on his trails.
Arguably the biggest event this season for Steve Harvey’s third year as host of Family Feud is the new “Family Food” promotion. From today (August 6th) through September 2nd you can find Family Feud game pieces on various food items in Burger King restaurants. Scratch the most popular answer off the game card and you could win some basic prizes like Burger King food, Nintendo 3DS packages, and Kindle Fires. However, the luckiest have the chance to win big prizes such as a Ford Explorer, Southwest Airline for a Year, a trip to Universal Orlando, a USA basketball fantasy camp, a trip to a Family Feud taping, or even $100,000. Visit the game’s website for more information on how to enter and win. Click here for a video teaser for the game.
The other big story, with updates from Broadcasting & Cable, is the big upgrades in time slots and runs Family Feud will gain for this upcoming season. Debmar-Mercury co-president Ira Bernstein told the magazine, “For this fall, we went out into the market and got doubleruns in virtually 100% of markets. We also will air between 5 and 8 p.m. in 75% to 80% of the country.” It’s getting upgraded in some significant markets like Sacramento (from 11AM to 7PM) and keeping its new slots in other major markets like New York Philadelphia, Chicago, and others. Readers are constantly telling us of new slots to watch the show. Be sure to tell us if it’s going to a new time period in your area.
Couple that with Steve Harvey’s upcoming talk show and this Burger King promotion and B&C says Feud is expected to move to the mid 4.0 to 5.0 rating. For comparison’s sake the last ratings report has Jeopardy! at a 5.2 and Wheel of Fortune at 6.0. Feud managed to increase 7% to a 3.2. Feud stands a shot at becoming the second most watched game show in the country in the next year or two…and who knows if it can go higher. This September will be the current version’s 15th season on the air and the 35th anniversary since the late Richard Dawson the original version of Family Feud began hosting in 1977. The 2012-2013 season, debuting September 10th, will see Feud go HD. It has been renewed through the 2014-2015 season, at least, for the time being.
We’ve been a fan of Family Feud for a long time and Steve Harvey since he began. I think we’re well on the record with that. I’ve, personally, never seen such a rise to fame like Feud has had. Let’s not forget that it was just in 2010 that Feud was barely hanging on to a 1.0 rating and was on the verge of cancellation. It survived because it was so cheap. John O’Hurley was a great host but the ratings only continued to drop. Within three years, though, Steve Harvey and the show’s brilliant production team have completely turned the show around and brought it back into popular culture. I couldn’t be happier for their success and I look forward to many more years of Steve and Family Feud.

No. Thank you, Feud. You have had many great moments (including some with Steve) that stay with us forever.
We’re so happy that you will bring us more fun and craziness for years to come, with Steve at the helm. Oh and the HD too. Can’t wait for September.
Sure fun to read comments like yours…thx!

Family Feud, when will the updated channel listings be posted? I’m looking for the new channel and time slot for Flint for an upcoming article.
Now, if you can only update to the ’94 theme and up the cash just a little ($25,000? I have another idea that will increase the payout technically, but frankly will be cheaper than now) and y’all will be GOLDEN!
LOVE “Feud!”
Interesting that Feud’s ratings is closing on Jeopardy’s ratings for upcoming season. Maybe by the 2013-14 season, or 2014-15 season Feud’s ratings clould close in on Wheel’s ratings.
“Feud” is getting a big upgrade here in Cincy. It’s moving from the CW station in the afternoons to Star 64 from 6-7pm.
That’s great! Thx for the update.
In Milwaukee “Feud” is moving from WMLW to CW18.
Here in Buffalo it currently airs on the CW at 12 PM. This fall it will be moving to Fox and it will air at 5 PM (with the Maury show being its lead in). It should do great in ratings.
Here in Norfolk, “Feud” had an afternoon slot at the start of the 2011-12 season…it started off at 3 pm, but then moved to the 5-6 pm hour. It’s come a long way since the Louie Anderson era; I remember the previous station aired it at 6 in the morning, then moved it to 2:30 am.
Yikes! 6AM & 2:30AM!! We should have closed the show with: “BUT WAIT, THERE’s MORE”…
Do you think Steve Harvey could be the next Richard Dawson as in hosting Family Feud?
No one can truly be “the next Richard Dawson”, but Steve is doing a fine job of carrying the torch!
I think there will be no one that can be the next Richard Dawson Feud is funny but the best Feud was with Ray Combs
I tried to read the B&C article but it leads me to their “subscription” site. Also, I’d live to see Feud make a dent in Wheel’s ratings. Seek revenge on them after 28 years!
For Rising ‘Feud,’ It’s All About Steve
Harvey, plus upgrades and double-runs, could boost show to record ratings

Two years ago, Debmar-Mercury and FremantleMedia North America made the decision to replace Family Feud host John O’Hurley with comedian Steve Harvey. The classic game show had dropped to a mid-1 household rating and was verging on cancellation.
That last-ditch effort panned out better than anyone imagined. This fall, Family Feud is moving into some of syndication’s most lucrative time slots across the country, according to Debmar-Mercury.
Prior to Harvey coming on as host, “the show was working at a good enough level to justify staying in production,” says Mort Marcus, copresident of Debmar- Mercury. “When Harvey came on, it started doing so much better that stations started to try it at 3, 4 and 5 p.m.”
“For this fall, we went out into the market and got doubleruns in virtually 100% of markets,” says Ira Bernstein, Debmar- Mercury copresident. “We also will air between 5 and 8 p.m. in 75% to 80% of the country.”
Since Harvey took over, the show has grown into a mid-3 household rating winner. Even in the slow summer months, Family Feud is averaging around a 3.2 live plus same day household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. By that measure, Feud is doing better than CBS Television Distribution’s talk leader Dr. Phil and is nipping at the heels of CTD’s magazine leader, Entertainment Tonight.
With these upgrades, Family Feud is expected to move into the mid-4 or even 5 ratings, a growth feat that’s rarely seen in television.
Should all go as expected, Family Feud will become the heir apparent to CBS Television Distribution’s Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!— two game shows that continue to perform well in syndication but that appeal to older audiences. In some markets, stations are replacing older-skewing shows with Family Feud, specifically because the show’s younger audience is more advertiser-friendly.
On Tribune-owned CW affiliate KTXL Sacramento, Family Feud is being upgraded from 11 a.m.-noon to a doublerun from 7 to 8 p.m., as well as a third play at 10:30 p.m. where it will lead into the station’s 11 p.m. news.
Over the past year, stations in 30 of the top 50 markets have upgraded the show, including Fox-owned WWOR New York, which moved Feud from a double-run at 2 p.m. to one at 5 p.m. in the country’s top market. Similarly, Fox-owned WPWR Chicago switched the show from a double-run at 4 p.m.—a respectable time slot in its own right—to one at 5 p.m., plus another two runs at 1 p.m. And in Philadelphia, the nation’s No. 4 market, the show moved from NBC-owned WCAU at noon to CBS-owned CW affiliate WPSG at 7 p.m.
While Family Feud can work as a news lead-in, the show’s other advantage is that it plays both as a game show and a comedy, allowing it to fit in well with TV stations’ offnetwork sitcom blocks.
Says Marcus: “While more traditional affiliates now air the show, Feud plays on a lot of Fox, CW and MyNetwork stations that still run sitcoms. This show plays right into those lineups.”
Come Sept. 4, the TV industry will find out if NBCUniversal’s The Steve Harvey Show, a new daytime talk show starring Harvey, has the same magic.

Do we know if Feud is getting an upgrade in timeslots in Boston?
I wonder if this will last…they tried dirtier questions with Karn in his first season. It worked OK then they scaled back. Combs had the over the topness but he was on top and then he…wasnt :(
Harvey’s game reminds me more of Combs than any other feud…I wonder if that has staying power…entering year 3…we will see…this is when Combs took a turn left and never recovered.
The better clearances will ALWAYS help…But that’s a big leap in times, facing off against J will be interesting…they pull different demos so that should be a plus for Harvey. It’s competition I’d like to see…personally Millionaire would be the show who should be shaking in its boots….with feud making a big leap into a SOLID and Entrenched #3 with eyes on #2…I wonder if Merideth’s show (i can’t even call it Millionaire anymore, it IS a different game) is on the ropes.
I totally agree. Harvey’s “Feud” reminds me MUCH more of Combs’ “Feud.” I think you have a good point Glenn. There HAS to be a falloff point. I think, though, with his talk show and this new Burger King deal, it won’t happen until at LEAST year 4. Honest guess year 5. But remember… If they make it to a 5.0, the fallback could be a 3.0. In other words, I see this era of “Feud” going a long way and a long time (as long as Harvey wants to)! :D
Wonder if it’s a U.S. only Burger King promotion
Wonder if it’s a U.S. only Burger King promotion?
Wonder if it’s a U.S. only Burger King promotion? or is it Canada too.
Don’t see it. Why? Every night my family and I can sit and enjoy Jeopardy and Wheel. My kids are at an age where I am not comfortable with the questions on Feud. There are many like us.
And yet this has nothing to do with ratings.
Huh? I just have a feeling that many households will reject this current incarnation of feud once they sense its often adult nature.
I’ve watched Feud since day one, couldn’t stomach this version.
Yet the show is doing better than it ever has previously during its current run. For every person/family that decides not to watch it, there will be another person/family that will.
I can understand your point with kids Chris, but if “Match Game”‘s bawdy humor worked in the ’70s, OF COURSE people like it now. Yes…a lot of people don’t like it, but enough people do to improve those ratings.
Unfortunately, it’s here to stay, I think.
Probably. But what was risque on the old Match Game went unsaid and was inferred. Now they’re so blatant. An episode this week used the word “dildo” as an answer. And the word “bitch” was on a few weeks ago. I teach my kids never to use that word…and it gets applause on Feud.
Not for me. No fun whatsoever in that.
Do we know if Feud is getting an upgrade in timeslots in Dallas-Ft. Worth Area?
Likely a US only, as Canada has a Taco Bell promo going on atm (w/Xbox). The problem with BKs promo is it’ll get burried in McDonald’s Gold Medal promotion going on. (which is a shame)
I wonder if the name of the “Family Food” promotion reminded anyone else of the classic Sesame Street sketch with Richard Dawson.
That’s the very first thing that came to my mind!
Me too! Course I don’t see this version of Feud being seen on Sesame…
Hey, I work @ BK, thank u very much!!!!!!
The Big M’s promotion is short, compared to ours. But if you were wondering which items to get for getting the game pieces, it is basically the soft drink cups(Sm./Med./Lg.), the speciality drink cups(Med w/1 game piece and Lg. w/2), and the Lg. Frypod.
I love Family Feud, but count me as one of the few who doesn’t like the direction the show is going in. Part of the charm of Richard Dawson was that he was funny and charming with everyday questions. Steve Harvey’s version has gotten so gross and vulgar lately. Also, I think Steve hams it up too long with every question. I don’t know… he’s not a bad host, but I’d prefer if they scaled back the sexual innuendo.
Amen…but it seems we’re in the minority.
Feud is moving from Pittsburgh CW to CBS2, weeknights at 7. CBS Evening News moves to 6:30. Ricki Lake is replacing Feud’s 2-3 timeslot.
Really? That’s shocking. I live in Pittsburgh. Never knew that. Thanks a lot.
Alex… You’re in Pittsburgh. Do you know a family with the last name Paradise? Totally random, but a question. lol.
family feud is awesome and host steve harvey is great i was a contestant on the show and was treated like someone very special i believe the upcoming season will be one the best so watch and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The difference (well, one difference) between “Match Game” and “Family Feud” is that on “Match Game”, there were certain answers that were off limits, most notably those referring to reproductive organs. Of course now, there seems to be at least one such answer that makes the survey on every episode. *sigh* I guess it’s just a matter of time until they ask “Name a word that rhymes with ‘duck’”…
Anyway, in the Philadelphia area, “Feud” is going to air on WPSG at 7 and 7:30, right up against “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune”. No word yet on whether WFMZ will keep showing it.
That, and nothing’s subtle in television anymore, ever since the Jerry Springer invasion of the ’90s more and more taboos have been broken. At least there was some subtlety and innuendo on Match Game (well from ’73 to ’91).
I’m happy for this version of Feud’s current success and think Steve Harvey is its best host (but a far third overall from the tied-for-first Dawson and Combs, and Marco Antonio Regil second), but I wouldn’t be sad if they tone down the content. Part of the fun of being a game show fan of the ’70s and ’80s was that anyone could watch. People compared this version to Combs’, well I think younger viewers were still “safe” if they were watching Ray Combs.
You’re very right!
I wish they would do something with that theme!
I wish Miami could be this lucky. Miami’s WSVN, which interrupts regularly scheduled programming constantly, has aired the Feud at 10am, since 2001, Louie’s last season. I say It’s time for an upgrade. Hey channels 4,6,10,33,and 39, get the Feud away from 7 so I don’t have to miss it.
Well, FF has had such a screwed up time slot in Philly ever since this version premiered in 99.It started at 10 AM on the NBC station. Then went to the same time slot on the WB station paired with To Tell The Truth. Then…who knows? I only rediscovered it on channel 48, an independent station at the time, at 6 and 6:30 PM for 2 years. Then when TBN bought the station, it wasn’t even airing on a Philly market station. Closest was Allentown, where it still runs at at various times in prime time. Then, it was on the FOX station at 4:00 AM for two seasons, one it was paired with Temptation. Last season, it got an upgrade to NBC10 as a double run at Noon. Now, it gets its best time slot since this run started, on CW Philly at 7 and 7:30 PM. I’m really excited, but I’m worried that in many markets it might be going head to head with Wheel and Jeopardy! In Philly, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! get amazing ratings on 6ABC. Nothing at 7 and 7:30 get anywhere near the same amount of viewers. So, I hope this move proves good for the show.
i like play the number i got from burger king the family feud game
