Exclusive: “Millionaire” Adds “Crystal Ball” Lifeline for Halloween Week
EXCLUSIVE TO BUZZERBLOG: Who Wants to be a Millionaire has already opened voting for its Halloween Week Lifelines. Click here to learn how to change the name of the Lifelines. However, they’ve got one more trick up their sleeves. In addition to new “Halloween-themed” names and icons for the “Ask The Audience” and “Jump The Question” lifelines, Millionaire‘s Executive Producer Rich Sirop tells me that Millionaire will be adding an additional lifeline for contestants playing during Halloween week, October 29 – November 2. The show will add the “Crystal Ball” Lifeline.
The “Crystal Ball” will allow a contestant to see the value behind the question before answering. It can only be used in the first round of the game and can only be used once per game. The decision to “Jump the Question” takes on a whole new meaning with this addition. If you know a question is worth $25,000; are you willing to take a guess to bank the big bucks, or do you voluntarily give up huge money in order to get closer to the $1,000,000 top prize? It’s a very interesting twist that will bring a different level of strategy to Halloween week.
What do you think of the new Lifeline?

Crystal Ball reminds me of a sucker bet at a casino. The goal in Millionaire (other than winning $1M) is to get through round 1 so that you keep your WHOLE bank. Crystal Ball is likely to encourage people to guess when they shouldn’t. Not to say the opposite can’t happen, but I feel some early exits/devastation coming…
That’s a great lifeline.
They should keep it for the show.
Wow, definitely an interesting and unique (no other version could adopt without adopting the super mix format) lifeline, especially considering that only about 10% of contestants make it to winning $100,000 (the point at which the Round 1 bank is worthless). I imagine contestants will use it on a question that they have a strong hunch on but aren’t 100% sure.
Great lifeline! If I’m dealing with a hard question…and find out it’s only worth $100…umm…buh-bye! LOL
I think if you’re going to have an extra lifeline that’s only for a special event, this is a pretty good one, because it doesn’t actually change the probability of answering correctly.
It’s an interesting lifeline, but it doesn’t help you advance any further in the game. That’s the only gripe I have about it. I mean, it’s great to see what a question is worth, but if you still don’t know the answer to it, you’re still stuck either Jumping it, walking away, or gambling with a 25% chance of success.
Anyone know when they are filming these episodes? Was thinking of going to a taping and these might be interesting.
It’s just another distraction from the fact that the show is no longer about people trying to win a million dollars. For any contestant who actually has that objective, the “crystal ball” is totally irrelevant and offers no help toward reaching the goal.
