The History of “The Pyramid”
If you haven’t heard GSN announced a revival of the classic game show The Pyramid will debut Monday, September 3rd, and air each weekday at 6:00PM ET. Mike Richards will host the modern take on the show. Attempts to get Pyramid back on the air have been going for a long time now. While some may remember the recent CBS Daytime pilots, attempts to get Pyramid back have been going on well before that; since 1996. Beyond a short lived and moderately rated (though critically derided) revival in 2002 the classic show has been absent. GSN may be the one to give us a pretty good run and from the looks of it, it’s got a very good shot. Let’s take a look back at the history of Pyramid‘s return, including some exclusive video and pictures from the various pilots that have never been seen before.
Pyramid first started its revival attempts in 1996. It was hosted by one of our favorites, Mark Walberg, but that was just about the only good thing. The show now saw two contestants alongside six “Pyramid Players”, who were the celebrities. Each was attached to a category. The game was in four rounds. The first round was essentially old-school Pyramid, where you selected a category/celebrity and had 30 seconds to guess 7 items. Round two was similar to a mini version of the famed “Winner’s Circle”. Round three saw a celebrity and contestants bounce back and forth between giving clues and answering for 60 seconds. The highest score at the end of the game won and played the Final Pyramid for $25,000. No photos or video exists of this publicly. That’s probably for the best. You can read more in-depth information about the pilot on USGameShows.
Sony tried a year later with another Pyramid pilot. This time the series was hosted by Chuck Woolery. They ditched most of the strange format and went back to the original game. The only difference was that the six “Pyramid Player” celebrities stayed. Each represented a category. The highest score went to the Final Pyramid (not the Winner’s Circle). The first time was for $10,000 and the second for $25,000. It wasn’t that bad, though the look was drastically different. For the first time ever here are some exclusive images of the pilot. It would take until 2002 for the show to come back, though it would only last two seasons.

After the moderate success, though critical bashing (which, in my opinion, was relatively unjust) the Donny Osmond edition got, Michael Davies attempted to bring the show back a few years later. In 2009 CBS Daytime shot a pilot for The $1,000,000 Pyramid in New York City. The show would go back to its roots with a classic looking set and game. Basically everything from the 80s version survived. The only difference was the cash. The first Winner’s Circle was worth $25,000 and the second $50,000. At the end of the season the best players would come back for the “League of Champions” where someone could win $1,000,000. Everything was looking good, but CBS decided they wanted a show that fit the party-like atmosphere of The Price is Right and they went with Let’s Make A Deal instead. We weren’t overly thrilled at first, but four years later it does seem like they made the correct choice.
Never giving up, a year later Sony and Embassy Row shot a Los Angeles-based pilot for The $500,000 Pyramid, again for CBS Daytime. The show got a new look; mainly it was brought to its feet finally. It still followed the retro rules mostly. One new feature was the “Double Down”. A team behind could use their Double Down to play words twice as difficult for two points instead of one. Also the second round offered a prize to any perfect score. The winning team plays for $10,000. Another one of these rounds would be played, and then both champions would face off at the end of the show for $25,000. The show would allegedly attempt to give away $500,000 though this was never explained. We assume it would work the same as the previous pilot. No photos or videos of this have been released to the public. CBS, again, passed on this. Frankly the second that they announced a talk show to rival The View with Julie Chen was in development, we figured Pyramid was toast.
After that we heard about repeated attempts to bring the show back at other networks like TBS and, back a few years ago, GSN. However, in March, GSN officially announced the development of a revival. The show would closely resemble the classic game with a few tweaks added. In this updated version hosted by Mike Richards contestants can win over $50,000. The four-year effort of bringing Pyramid back will finally happen on September 3rd. It looks incredibly good and we hope it works out for them. More than anything, though, we’re glad to see GSN go back to its roots and bring back some of its viewers favorite shows. This one looks like it will be a slam dunk.

Amazing footage of the 2009 pilot. Very promising stuff there. When it comes to Donnymid, nothing was wrong with it when it came down to the core. It’s just that the things they changed really bogged it down. The feel was a bit too different. Thank God it didn’t take the route of the other two pilots (Pyramid Players? Really? Why not just get together with the folks over at Match Game ’98 and package the Match Game-Pyramid Hour to syndication?)
In any case, I hope the GSN version does well. Pyramid and Password are really some of the best word games out there and I think it’s time they get back in the saddle.
I loved that pilot, and really wish Cbs had picked it up! That would’ve made a great afternoon lineup: Pyramid and Lets Make A Deal, two of the best!
I can’t wait for the GSN Revival in September, and hope they stick to what made Pyramid so great (though it really sounds like they will.)
That vid was awesome, nearly soiled myself. I’m hoping that what I just saw will be what we’re going to see in September, except for the host. I wish there were more to that vid, cause I take it the smaller pyramid get rolled/pushed in front the Winner Circle spot. It would suck if that smaller pyramid stayed off stage during the entire time.
ok I’ve managed to answer my own question when I saw the other vid of the Dean Cain Pilot.
Yes the set was really narrow, actually!
Donnymid suffered from bad category writing and inconsistent judging. There’s a clip on Youtube where the Winner’s Circle category was “Things in a Toolbox” and the contestant kept saying “Tools” and was not given credit. The celebrity eventually gave an illegal clue trying to get the contestant to say “Toolbox”. The show had potential and got decent ratings, but Sony decided to go for some talk show that didn’t even make it past its first season. I would’ve liked to have seen it get a 3rd season, just with tighter writing and judging. The celebrities changing daily was dumb too.
Wanted to add the tournament structure was completely messed up. The idea of completing both Winner’s Circles to win $100K was intriguing, but they copped out and made so that if no one did that, then the fastest WC time won it all. Wasn’t there one tournament when no one got the money?
I wouldn’t say “no one got the money”. But, if you’re referring to whether or not the $100,000 was guaranteed or not (in one tournament), I’d have to agree with you. I’m pretty sure that tourney winner came from the contestant search from Aventura, FL.
I was at that search and the winner of that search went on to that particular tournament.
That might be what I’m thinking of…it’s all sounding clearer now.
Cool! Glad I was able to help.
Great video and pics of the previous pilots! Awesome job!
OK…now I’m getting excited for the new version. I can’t wait to see more pics and video of that one! Of course, I can’t wait for 9/3, either.
BTW…what about “Crackers” for that last category?
Did anyone else notice they used the original $25K/$100K theme? I really wish GSN would use a theme at least similar to that.
Actually Brad, the original Pyramid theme from 1973-1981 was called “Tuning Up.” IMO, it sounds much better than the lightweight remix you are refering to. So I would love them to use that one.
Couldn’t agree with you more, Brian in CT! I’d love to hear a new redo of “Tuning Up” instead of bringing the 80s theme out of mothballs yet again.
That said, I loved what I saw from the Cain/Vincent pilots. It was a nice tribute to what came before without being an exact copy of the 80s version (like the Davidson show was). I didn’t even mind them not using the “flute clock”.
I loved the low-angle shots of the Pyramid after the win. I was not disappointed at all in the winning Pyramid LED effects in this pilot vs the old chase effects. The Pyramid really exploded with excitement…even though the top of the Pyramid had no effects whatsoever! I always thought Bruce Bermester in the 80s had problems showing the full Pyramid in chase mode after a win, since he rarely did…even after a $100,000 win. But this looked great! I would love to have seen the entire WC round.
However, I wasn’t so crazy about the small pyramid being trotted out in front of the big Pyramid. Looked pretty cluttered to me. Having it still in the screen shot during the WC round made the set look even more cluttered.
And the logo looked pretty cheap and amateurish. It’s almost like every version of the show since the 70s has gone out of its way to make the logo look worse than the version before.
It’s a shame that CBS didn’t pick this version up. I did notice that none of the clips Buzzerblog has posted so far showed much of the potential hosts. Did they suck?
If the GSN version is based on the ’09 pilot(s), I think fans like us will be pleased.
I loved the ‘flute clock’ myself – it made The Winner’s Circle more dramatic!
Don’t get me wrong…I love the flute clock, too. I just didn’t hate that it wasn’t there in this pilot.
Bring back the flute clock but this time I would like to see an eggcrate display of the clock just like the one seen on the classic game show Blockbusters back in the early 80′s.
I don’t know; I like this theme better than the original, myself. In my opinion it was a better fit for this particular pilot.
The 2002-04 version had four tournaments with two different formats, but the players qualified in the same way, by winning $25,000, which took two perfect boards.
In the first and last tournaments, six people had qualified. Those used the “best time if no one gets it” format. In the second and third, four people had qualified. For those two, two of the four faced off on Monday and two of the four on Tuesday, with every trip worth $25,000. The top winner from each day came back on Wednesday, with every trip worth $50,000. Not only did no one win $100,000 in either of those tournaments, but in the third, the two finalists combined had less than $100,000, even including their prior winnings.
Thanks! I thought that sounded familiar. Just goes to show that a tournament needs the right elements.
Does anyone know if they’re using a version of either classic theme songs for the GSN version…or are they creating an entirely new one?
I don’t think anyone knows yet. Isn’t there some taping soon (this weekend?)…maybe we can find out more.
Good call Ghost. I thought that information had already been set. But, I’m sure we’ll know soon. Thanks!
I am very glad GSN is on board with this thing. Even so, I still wish CBS had picked it up instead of the Talk. There are so many damn talk shows in daytime- network and syndicated. No need for another. What they should have done is reduced LMAD to a half hour and premiered Pyramid as a half hour show instead of a 60 minute show like they tried with the pilots. That way there’s room on the schedule for both Pyramid and the Talk. They’ve made LMAD into a very fun show that sort of works for an hour, but I still think it’s too much. They could easily cut it down to 30 minutes by cutting out the 20-or-so seconds of stock music and screaming that takes place EVERY TIME we need a new contestant. That works on TPIR, and it’s annoying as hell on LMAD. Just pick somebody and let’s move on. No need to bring the game to a screeching halt.
I digress… we’re getting Pyramid back and I’m stoked. Also, I like chicken. That is all.
It’s too bad we don’t do 45-minute shows on this side of the pond. I think LMAD and Pyramid would have been better off for it.
As happy as I would have been to have Pyramid sooner rather than later, what I’ve seen and read makes me think this version will make it worth waiting an extra three years!
Is that Alan Kalter (Late Show) announcing in the pilot video? That would be awesome since he announced for the original Pyramid when it was in NYC.
Yes, that was Alan Kalter’s voice in the 2009 NYC Based Pyramid Pilot. Interesting that he said “From the CBS Studios in New York”, when it was actually taped at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens. At any rate, it was great to hear Alan’s voice in a Game Show again. It seems safe to assume that Alan wont be involved, since the new version will be taped in LA – unless they add his voice in post production. Not likely.
Who knows ? With Mr Davies involved, if Pyramid is renewed, perhaps it will eventually return home to NYC, and Alan Kalter will be involved. From the looks of things, it looks like they can tape 40 shows in less than 2 weeks, and it shouldn’t be impossible for any LA based folks to commute.
What matters the most, is Pyramid will return to television in September. Good luck to everyone involved !
Alan Kalter should do more game shows. I just love his voice.
Alan Kalter was the announcer for the $50,000 Pyramid.
Kalter was also the announcer on the short-lived Money Maze in 1975 and on To Tell The Truth in the early 80s.
Steve Harvey was considered to host Pyramid before Donny Osmond was.
So Steve Harvey, with hair.
Drew Carey was a serious contender for the host of The Pyramid On GSN. It would have been amazing if Drew hosted two game shows at the same time.
It would have been nice, but he did this back in 07 when he hosted TPIR and The Power of Ten. He did a great job with both shows, but it was a shame that Power of ten got the ax because the second was scheduled against American Idol which was a dumb move by CBS on their part.
Too bad drew is busy with price to do another show, though I would consider Alfonso Ribbero as host for this version. He deserve’s another shot at hosting a show since GSN screwed him on another season of Catch 21, which was one of GSN’s huge hits!!!! Thus he would have been a perfect fit.
I would like to see a reboot of the GSN game show Catch 21 with either a new host Todd Newton or Steve Harvey, and a new card dealer, and a new set of the show. Raise the grand prize up from $25,000 to $100,000 in the bonus round, and add some bonus bells and whistles just like the sound effect heard on the classic game show Dream House back in the 80′s, followed by a balloon drop and some confetti falling down on the set of Catch 21, everytime a contestant wins $100,000 in the bonus round on Catch 21. I think my choice for my host contender on Catch 21 will be Steve Harvey.
Ironic that his boss got the gig. You know, it’s possible for Drew to host two shows. Like he did with TPIR and Improv-a-Ganza. You know Bob hosted TOC and TPIR at the same time.
Pardon the spelling. It’s hard to type on the ipad.
let’s make a deal is better than a 1/2 show
I agree…it just drags too much. I don’t mind watching it, but they are clearly stretching at times. An hour of Pyramid and Deal, leading into TPiR would’ve made plenty of sense. You get your cerebral game, then a party/prize game, then another party/prize game.
GSN should bring back Hot Streak and get Tim Vincent to host and call it: Tim Vincent’s Hot Streak.
There were also two pilots in 2000, one each for NBC and syndication, which eventually led to “Donnymid”. I remember reading that the NBC pilot used a $1,000,000 format.
Oh, and the “Pyramid Rocks” pilot for VH1 in 1999. The first few minutes of that one are present online.
and Steve Harvey and Jason Alexander were both considered to host. Yup, Steve, before Feud. Also, the latter would have been good. Since he was a frequent guest on Davidson’s Pyramid and he knows the game.
Y’know, if you have a special super-secret inside source for CBS pilots …
I would perform sexual favors for you (and for anyone else you care to designate) if you could get us a bit of Neil Patrick Harris’ pilot for The Cube.
That is sick.
One think that I’m hoping for that with this new format for deciding how much money you play for in the Winner’s Circle, The dollar value at the top of the Pyramid will change based on how much you are playing for.
Hoping for Tuning Up to be used as the theme. Either the original or a remix.
Maybe the version they use on the Facebook game?
That’s not “Tuning Up,” that’s a remake of the 1980s theme.
I’m excited about the show’s return, but am a little upset that I got turned down, in spite of submitting my personal info. I’ve waited my whole life to try out for it. I hope this show does well enough for me to have a chance. Any idea how I could get on? I wish they would come to the Miami area for these contestant searches. Millionaire never seems to show any interest in Miami nor West Palm. What are we south floridians? Dumb? I don’t think so.
I agree, Adam. They should do more searches there. I was at a contestant search for Donny Osmond’s “Pyramid”. While I didn’t get chosen, it was nice to see. Everyone had a lot of fun.
I really think the Tim Vincent pilot could’ve worked on CBS, and I’m glad they took the 100-200-300-400-500-750 scale from here (by the looks of it) for this new GSN version. Like how the audience showed in the background as well. After playing the clip you attached, there was a selection of clips, one of which was a BTS of the taping in progress (and yes, it showed the main game pyramid and Winner’s Circle being slid in and out). May have to look at it again…
I think that its 550 instead of 500. But I could be wrong.
Really like the sound of The Pyramid, but I hope it doesn’t use Tuning Up. I never liked it, and while I’d be okay with he later version that sounded a bit like it, I’d much rather they used a new theme so long as it’s nothing like the Donnymid theme which was the only part that I didn’t like, save for the judging.
I like the 80s theme better than runny up.
80s theme is a Jimmy Hart Version of Tuning Up (such that I actually call it Tuning Up Again)
I mean turning up. Gosh, i hate typing on my ipad. Also, Jason Alexander was also considered to host Pyramid before Donny Osmond. He would have been great. Having been a frequent celebrity guest on the Davidson version.
He was? I am surprised GSN didn’t think of something like that…seeing as they like to hire ’80s and ’90s sitcom actors/actresses.
I hope Michael Richards overcomes the doubters out there and does a good job and we get a good version of Pyramid back on the air after 3 long years of trying. But I don’t know if ANYONE can match up to Dick Clark, and that might hurt people’s perception of whoever’s behind the podium. Moreso since Dick passed away not too long ago, so he’s really fresh in our minds.
You should have provided a link to Randy Amasia’s review of Pyramid ’96. Just to show how brutal it would have been.
I second the person who pointed out that you forgot Pyramid Rocks too.
Didn’t someone say that the Richards pilot used the ’80s theme? I hope, hope, HOPE that Davies took the best parts of the 2009 pilot and that those carried over to The Pyramid. At least there’s no more Dark and Dramatic set from the little I saw!
And I wouldn’t mind seeing Caroline Rhea on another game show :-)
I wouldn’t mind if Caroline Rhea is going to be a frequent guest panelist on an updated version of Match Game hosted by John O’Hurley in 2013. I’ve loved her appearances on the 90′s version of Hollywood Squares. I even would love to see Hollywood Squares come back in 2013 with Caroline Rhea as the center square panelist. My choice for the new host of Hollywood Squares…Frank Nicotero.
Reread the set article on MPD. For the record, Tim Vincent is Welsh. ;)
The 80′s version of both shows would’ve been better if the sound effects cued the bonus bells and whistles just like the sound effect version of The Price Is Right everytime the contestant won the Winner’s Circle round. The $100,000 version would’ve been better if the contestant won $100,000 in the Winner’s Circle round, followed by a big balloon drop and some confetti falling down and a bonus bells and whistles sound effect heard on The Price Is Right everytime the contestant won the tournament.
No, it wouldn’t have in both cases.
