Octagon and Smoke And Mirrors Creative Bring Thailand “Obsessed” Format to America

Here’s a country you don’t think of for format imports: Thailand.  Octagon Entertainment and Smoke And Mirrors Creative are bringing the popular Thailand game show Fan Pan Tae to the United States under the title Obsessed.  The format sees devoted fans of a certain subset of pop culture face off to see who knows best.  Every week sees these obsessed fans test their ability to ability to recognize pictures, solve puzzles, and identify mystery objects in order to win a prize of a lifetime.  The contestants can be obsessed about anything in the world of sports, music, history, literature, science, geography and pop culture. Examples given included anything from motorcycles to Barbie dolls.

“With over 450 episodes already produced for the international market, we know that this draws on a broad array of topics, information and challenges with proven success in attracting a broad audience with richly diverse contestants,” said David Stanley, head of Octagon’s new production division. “We already have several interested buyers and are recruiting contestants and potential hosts for a pilot,” added Darryl Trell and Howard Kitrosser of Smoke & Mirrors. “We saw a hit in this property from the moment we found it and are encouraged that so many buyers feel the same way. It is exciting to be finally getting to the work of creating this show for the American audience.”

Here’s a small look at the Thailand version. Does it look like something that would interest you? I like the idea of the show so I’m curious to see where this can go. Good luck to them. Always nice to see new quiz shows pop up in America.

The original series, Fan Pan Tae, has run for over 450 episodes in its home country of Thailand from Workpoint Entertainment Public Co., Ltd. and is distributed worldwide by Small World IFT.

I’m not “Obsessed” but this game show was made for me and I’m hoping to hear more about this soon…

This format looks like a winner to me. I’m curious how they might change things for a US audience, but I don’t want to bring up anything in particular that might spoil pts 2-4 of the linked episode too soon.

I expect them to change the title, though — isn’t there a A&E reality show about compulsions called Obsessed?

Good to see a new Quiz Show coming over here. I wonder what network will take it. Hopefully not the Minute to Win It guys of NBC, or they’ll ruin it like they did M2WI and WSS.

Come on now. Topic of game shows. Who’s in?

    • Arc says:

Totally not I. I’m a lightweight compared to most of the internet game show fans, and I imagine the benchmark for success is probably being able to “Name the original host of Wheel of Fortune, his co-host, the network it appeared on… and the date of its broadcast.”

I found an episode for Steve Jobs fans, and one of the contestants attempted to identify the city an Apple Retail store was in based on a picture where 96% of the picture was hidden O_o

Hands Down this is a big winner. I watched the entire show and what they did with the whole show is just amazing. This is the perfect show that needs to come over to America. I see way too many easy roads that they will go for Music. My hope is that this ends up on a great channel. Maybe ABC since they like feel good game shows.

Interesting…if you can get different interests it will work…if they confine it to remote areas of pop culture it will fail…I hope it gets picked up…sounds fun and not too far over the top (like most Asian game shows)
