Mo Farah Becomes First Person to Beat “The Cube”; Wins £250,000

The last great game show jackpot has finally been won.  Mo Farah, the British international track and field athlete, and current 5000m world champion, has become the first person ever to beat ITV’s The Cube and collect the £250,000 jackpot.  Mo beat The Cube with six lives remaining.  He had seven lives going into the jackpot game, an unheard of total for this tough show.  Having practically no difficulty on any game, The Cube chose Barrier, where he must walk over three uneven spaced and positioned bars, as his final game.  For the first time ever host Phillip Schofield joined Mo inside The Cube to celebrate the win.  No one has beaten The Cube in 44 episodes since it began in August 2009.  Three others before, though, have made it to the jackpot game.  No one but Mo has gone for it.

In an interview with The Sun, Mo Farah said winning The Cube is harder than the Olympics.  He stated, “It is harder than running in a race, for sure. When you have a race, you can train and you know you have done all the training. You know what kind of shape you are in and you work out and plan the race and how you want to do it. But with The Cube, you have no idea what is coming up next. You don’t know what will happen. It is harder.”  Mo’s charity was the Mo Farah Foundation which relieves suffering in his home country of Somalia.

As I said earlier, The Cube was basically the last big jackpot show left on the air to win.  We’re really glad to see it happen, especially to a great charity like Mo Farah’s.  The Cube has never taken it easy on any contestant, including celebrities.  It is incredibly hard to win as anyone who has stepped foot inside can tell you.  We’re just unbelievably thrilled to see The Cube finally go down.  And, as always, fantastic score by Nick Foster for the big win.  Next week is another celebrity special featuring Olympians Fatima Whitbread and Dai Greene. After that there’s a break before we get to the sixth season. Can we get another jackpot winner? You’ll have to watch to find out. Congratulations again to Mo. We couldn’t be happier.

Take a look at the big win.  It’s always great to see these go off.  Video courtesy ITV and Objective Productions.  Removed one week after publication.

AWESOME! 10/10! Would have been a 15/10 if that slow-mo of lowering the mask was the last thing we saw before the second attempt. I knew what was going to happen, yet I was still completely invested! Love this show.

I wish The Cube makes an American debut soon.

  • Steven says:

This show is incredible. I just don’t see how this wouldn’t be popular here. Everyone I’ve shown this show to has liked it, and that spans across MULTIPLE demographics.

  • Ken in Hong Kong says:

When Tom Fletcher of McFly faced the same game for £250,000 last year and opted not to try with four lives, I thought, “What is it going to take to beat this cube?” We now know the answer: a gold-medal Olympic athlete. Now the question is, can anyone else do it?

I’ve loved this show from the start. It’s far better than “A Minute to Win it,” I think because we get to see the struggle of a person facing a daunting task. The human drama, in some small way, like conquering Mount Everest or walking on the moon and returning safely.

Last I heard, CBS continues to sit on the pilot that was made with Neil Patrick Harris as the host. I’m not surprised because I think network executives, on the whole, have lost sight of what makes good television while they worship the almighty dollar. Put it on on Sunday night at 8, and it would become a phenomenon — the kind of thing people talk about at the water cooler the next morning.

A gold-medal Olympic athlete with nerves of steel and tons of self-confidence.

I hope we viewers/fans don’t have to wait too long to see a regular contestant beat The Cube. :)

    • Scott says:

CBS is also continuing to sit on the pilot for Secret Fortune with Donny Osmond.

Ever since 2009, this network would rather introduce 100 new comedies into its schedule than take a chance with a 6-episode season of a new primetime game show. It’s sad to see that the only shows they really care about are comedies, dramas, The Amazing Race, Big Brother and Survivor.

    EPIC WIN!!!!!!!

And wow what AMAZING victory music!!!

    Congratulations Mo you DID IT!!!!

  • shelly says:

Definitely an amazing win (even though I knew it was coming as I was somewhat spoiled several months ago). So happy for Mo. \o/

Meanwhile, I would give my female organs to see the US pilot.

  • Coupon Boy says:

And he didn’t even need to remove his jeans in order to get across it like some people do.

  • QuartrGuy says:

You see? THIS is why I’m jealous of UK programming right now! We get poorly executed messes like Who’s Still Standing, and THEY get absolute GOLD like The Cube and The Chase! It’s NOT RIGHT!

    • Adam says:

Right you are QuartrGuy. Speaking of Who’s Still Standing, I wish That show could be revived here in the US. It had a great format, which unjustly had butchered by Craig Plestis and Tim Puntillo. Two men I would love nothing more than to send hate mail to for messing up what could’ve been a great show. In fact, let’s all dismantle Smart Dog Media.

As for who’s still standing, it needs to be revived. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

And back to the “absolute Gold”‘ the cube and the chase, I can’t stand how the USA would rather watch trash like Baggage, Love triangle and other crap.

  • Dale says:

This is why i love this show, the final game is impossibly possible, unlike in minute to win it where its just impossible to win the final game.

  • donny says:

No body else think it was fixed? Also I think theirs more pressure on a normal contestant than their is someone raising for charity. But can’t take too much away from him he is what he is…..

  • AC says:

Minute To Win It has been off the air for 3 years now… Even before then you taunted us with a Cube pilot… Any time now, America…

  • Ken from Scarborough says:

not only did Mo Farah beat The Cube and now he won the 10,000 meter race on home soil!
I guess he figured since he beat The Cube, winning a Gold Medal in the Olympics should be a breeze!
