Weekend Replay: A “Deal or No Deal” Finish to Remember

We’re coming very close to 2,000 episodes of Channel 4′s Deal or No Deal and the all-time classic episodes are still coming in.  This Wednesday had one in particular that no one will ever forget.  There have been four £250,000 winners and all are young women.  Our contestant is Mariyam, who is another determined young woman.  She’s a fitness instructor from Blackburn who lost 100 pounds over the course of three years after not settling for who she was.  She’s clearly determined and has the look of a winner.  We’re at five-box and the £250,000 with a nice £50,000 backup is still there.  However, so is the penny.  Mariyam must open three boxes before the final offer.  Is she on her way to being the fifth quarter millionaire?  Or is she joining the 1p club in one of the biggest collapses of all time?  Trust me…this is one no fan of Deal wants to miss and continues to prove why the UK version is so great.

That was pretty depressing to watch.  She had the drive, and for anyone to win big you have to be able to make a giant gamble in hope that it works out, and it just didn’t this time.  I admire her desire to win this, though.  She had the look of a winner and, frankly, it looked like she wanted to prove something to herself more than anything else.  She wanted to prove that she is willing to go all the way to the end and accomplish what she set out to do.  It’s just like her amazing weight loss story.  But for the 1p to come again…wow.  Great, jaw dropping episode.  It’s one that will be hard to forget.  What did you think?

It may be just me, but the audio is miles ahead of the video almost immediately.

    Ouch. :(

So, so unfortunate. It sucks because this, essentially, is what “Deal” is all about. Every person who has won the big money has had to have the will, the drive, and the ability to truly gamble a lot throughout the game to win big. Unfortunately, as with everything in life, it can’t work out every time. This was one of those times.

With her circumstances, it’s just really sad to see. :(

If nothing else, it does prove one thing. The British “Deal or No Deal” really does produce some of the best game show television (and TV, in general) in the world.

I think she should have stopped at 19,000 pounds. At that point it was clear that she wouldn’t be # 5 so she should have made sure she went home with something. I really wish the show would produce a male quarter-millionaire already. Every male who went on the show either didn’t have the guts to go all the way (even when they had ample back-up on the board) or just didn’t have board to do it. It’s really irritating me at this point.

One of the biggest idiots in the history of the show, and the biggest reason why I will no longer watch. The 1p amount should be retired after being won 95 times, because it has become both irrelevant and meaningless. Also, why was this even posted? Promoting idiocy is a bad idea, you know.

    • Closing Logo Enthusiast says:

      Noel said she’s the 44th 1p winner.

I think DOND has run its course after nearly seven years. Even with high-anxiety moments like these, there isn’t much to come back to.

    • EV says:

Is there something wrong with you? Nothing from a few minutes of a game show should be enough to make a snap judgement that somebody is an “idiot”. The most you could say is that she made a couple idiotic moves, and even that is debatable unless there’s a +EV offer.

  • Damien says:

Good Lord – I thought the American version of DoND was bad with its filler and stalling tactics… 4:34 to order TWO boxes. I didn’t want to spoil myself for drama’s sake, but I was willing for everyone to shut up and get moving with the game already.

I’m almost curious to hear what the offer was at the five box stage… I would have thought it would have been a significant amount of money for people to consider dealing, but given that the offer at three boxes was barely 60% of the expected value, I doubt it. I must say, between the really low offers and the number of boxes the contestant has to open (essentially not giving the contestant a safety net at any point of the game), this is the harshest and most unforgiving iteration of DoND I’ve seen.

I felt the moment she turned down that £60,000 that it would backfire horribly, and it did. She’s made of stronger stuff than I am, because I think I would have either fallen apart right on the set, or just walked out in self-disgust the moment my box was opened. I hope she burned that rose the Banker gave her… I would want as few reminders of that game as possible.

I showed some people this clip, and if they’d have crashed and burned like this ignoramus did here, they’d have done something far worse post-game. I won’t mention it here, but let’s just say that it would have been pretty bad.

Once she turned down 60 large, I knew she was dead in the water. She was probably one of the most “American” contestants the show has had. On the American version, when it was still on, this kind of play was a regular occurrence, and it resulted in two week’s worth of shows where no one won more than $100.

If this display of extreme greed could be summed with a sound effect, it would be the sound of a car crashing into a brick wall at 200 kilometers per hour.
