Todd Newton and “Jeopardy!” Win at 2012 Daytime Emmy Awards
Last night HLN presented the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. Good luck if you found the network. Let’s be honest: most of us only cared about the awards for best game show and best game show host. We had a major upset in the Outstanding Game Show Host category. Todd Newton, host of The Hub’s Family Game Night, which was just brought back from near-cancellation for a third season, took the award home. Todd beat Meredith Vieira, Wayne Brady, and the expected winner Ben Bailey.
We’re very happy to see Todd get recognized for the show. We weren’t expecting it and I doubt many were (that was not a knock at his obvious talent). However, he definitely deserves it. This is the style of show he’s always been good at and for such a small show to be recognized like that is a major accomplishment and very telling of Todd’s abilities. Congratulations, and we hope this trend can continue in the future.
Jeopardy! took home the other genre award: Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show. The Alex Trebek hosted quizzer beat BrainSurge, Let’s Make A Deal, Wheel of Fortune, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and the expected winner Cash Cab. This is the second straight year Jeopardy! won. We get so few hard, fast quiz shows in this country that I’m always relieved when they get recognized.
Happy with the results? I know I am. I’m well on the record saying I can’t quite understand why people feel Cash Cab is the greatest show on the planet and deserving of all these awards.

I’m happy Todd won the Emmy he was nominated for. I used to watch him on “Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck” all the time, and you knew he was enjoying his job, that this is something he loves to do. I haven’t seen “Family Game Night,” but I’m glad he was rewarded for his job.
Double awesomesauce. Congrats to Todd, as well as the crew of Jeopardy!
The question is will there be a FORTIETH edition of the Daytime Emmys?
Todd hosted The Price is Right Stage show in Atlantic city last October as well.. another show that fit him very well .. at my show he got picked up by a football player sized person and got carried around the stage and he couldnt help but let out a giant laugh on his mic as he was being carried around… hes a fun host to watch and see live in person..
FYI, HLN was known as Headline News, which CNN originally used for a 30 minute Newscast that would be shown 24 hours a day, then they started to add non-straight news segments to it, and now it is mainly talk shows. So if you are looking for it, check the News section of your cable/dish listings.
And congrats to Todd Newton, glad to hear the show got picked up for a third season.
As for Jeopardy, alas, the questions are getting a bit easier and more pop culture at times, but still a great show and format.
I should add, the Emmy show is scheduled to be rebroadcasted a couple of times tonight on HLN.
This right here is what i am calling the biggest FU in game show history…..
Todd was up for the idea of being the new host when Bob left TPiR (hence reason why he got to host the stage show), and while Drew has not been able to get the show to the success it once had. Now Todd has got the top honors and Drew is still trying to be funny as a skinny man
Bob also had seen the show fall into the rut it’s in…Drew didn’t drive it into a demographic rut. There’s also no proving either way that Todd would have had more, or less, success..but rest assured, no one could achieve the ratings of an era when there were effectively three meaningful viewing choices. That’s not a reflection on current hosts, simply an acknowledgement that the TV landscape bears precious little resemblance to what it did 30 years ago.
What some may not know is that Todd is also a stage hypnotist (TRUE – see his website). Seems at one of his shows some Emmy voters were in the audience. Unbeknownst to them he gave them the “whammy,” thus he won last night (and if you believe that, I have some scabland in Florida you might be interested in.)
Take nothing away from him. Newton’s long deserved the recognition, and The Hub is probably glad they didn’t pack FGN away. They need to run with this while CBS continues to kick itself for letting this fish get away.
Not really sure why Jeopardy keeps winning. It’s always just seemed resoundingly dull to me, save for the bizarre late 70′s version with Art Fleming. Glad Todd finally got an award for something. If he hosted TPIR I might actually watch it just because of him.
I’m so glad Todd won. I’ve watched many of the shows he hosted, and his love of hosting and his contestants shows. Congratulations to him!
I’m not surprised that “Jeopardy!” won. I watch it every night and learn something new every day. To me, that’s what a game show should be…part fun and part educational. That show has stood the test of time, and I am glad it is still very popular.
congrats to todd in winning the daytime emmy as best game show host.
I loved HLN’s sort of shout out to “Whammy!” during Todd’s walk-on for winning the Emmy. Let’s you know people have been watching that revival all the 10 years it’s been on.
MAJOR congrats to Todd Newton! One of the best hosts we have! “Family Game Night” is SUCH a joy to watch! “D
What shout out was that? I didn’t catch it any of the times it was on.
How does Jeopardy have “audience participation”? The audience just sits there watching, as opposed to Let’s Make a Deal, where the audience members actually get picked by Wayne to be the contestants. Another one of life’s greatest mysteries, I suppose…
The slash is an “or,” not an “and.” :-)
I agree with you Alex. Ive tried watching Cash Cab a couple of times and it’s ok. It’s original, it’s got REAL people (well maybe still, havent watched it in years), but it’s not emmy worthy
Very well-deserved. This should be the ticket to a network gig at some point in the future. He has paid his dues in a tough industry where many hosts are recycled comedians (which is to take nothing away from Wayne Brady), as opposed to the earlier days where radio was a common path into the genre. This is a host who loves his job and loves the genre and is a class act. Great acceptance speech, too.
Congradulations Todd on his Daytime Emmy win. I would love to see Todd Newton host an updated version of the classic game game show High Rollers in 2013. I would love to see him host a rebooted version of Catch 21 on GSN, with a new set a new hostess and a new bonus round where the top grand prize is raised to $1000,000. Let’s all hope that Todd Newton can do a double duty of hosting Family Game Night and High Rollers in 2013.
