CBS Wins the Day For Fake, Snarky “Dancing On the Stars” Announcement

If you care about reality/competition game shows at all, you’ve probably heard about the battle between CBS and ABC regarding Big Brother and The Glass House. Frankly I don’t like that style of show much (it’s just not my thing) but from what I’ve seen…they are rather similar.  While the courts are deciding on what ABC can and cannot do with the show (although, given the out-of-the-gate dud it’s been it may not have too much life in it to begin with) CBS took things into their own hands.  Just minutes ago they put out a fake press release for the, “exciting, ground-breaking and completely original new reality program,” Dancing On the Stars.  This is going to be fun to follow the next few days.  I normally wouldn’t post stuff like this…but come on.  It’s very funny.  Check out the fake release below.

CBS ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT OF “DANCING ON THE STARS,” AN EXCITING AND COMPLETELY ORIGINAL REALITY PROGRAM THAT OWES ITS CONCEPT AND EXECUTION TO NOBODY AT ALL

Los Angeles, June 20, 2012 – Subsequent to recent developments in the creative and legal community, CBS Television today felt it was appropriate to reveal the upcoming launch of an exciting, ground-breaking and completely original new reality program for the CBS Television Network.

The dazzling new show, DANCING ON THE STARS, will be broadcast live from the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and will feature moderately famous and sort of well-known people you almost recognize competing for big prizes by dancing on the graves of some of Hollywood’s most iconic and well-beloved stars of stage and screen.

The cemetery, the first in Hollywood, was founded in 1899 and now houses the remains of Andrew “Fatty” Arbuckle, producer Cecil B. DeMille, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Paul Muni, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, George Harrison of the Beatles and Dee Dee Ramone of the Ramones, among many other great stars of stage, screen and the music business. The company noted that permission to broadcast from the location is pending, and that if efforts in that regard are unsuccessful, approaches will be made to Westwood Village Memorial Park, where equally scintillating luminaries are interred.

“This very creative enterprise will bring a new sense of energy and fun that’s totally unlike anything anywhere else, honest,” said a CBS spokesperson, who also revealed that the Company has been working with a secret team for several months on the creation of the series, which was completely developed by the people at CBS independent of any other programming on the air. “Given the current creative and legal environment in the reality programming business, we’re sure nobody will have any problem with this title or our upcoming half-hour comedy for primetime, POSTMODERN FAMILY.”

“After all,” the spokesperson added, “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”

I have to give CBS points for handling this incredibly cleverly and tactfully.

  • Joe Capitano says:

My first reaction: Juvenile. That said, it seems they had a certain BB robot come up with this gem. “Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-ZING!!!”

  • David says:

The person who came up with this probably was leaving his/her job at the end of the week anyway…or is getting their parking space upgraded because of this.

  • John says:

    Funny? Perhaps.
    Unprofessional, childish and unnecessary? Absolutely.
    Shame on CBS.

  • David says:

Might not be the most professional…but it is funny. :-D

  • Razer says:

I see less “satire” and “funny”, more “crying child” and “pissing match”.

  • MCB in Lafayette, IN says:

Oh come on, folks, that’s hilarious! :)

  • Eric says:

…….ok i am going to say this again

ABC can’t create a good show,
CBS just plain flat out sucks,
NBC is too much into music,
    and
FOX isn’t getting the formula right (except for chase)
and as said on this site
The British IS Better Than Us on Making Game Shows

  • BG says:

It’s a joke guys, obviously meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Lighten up. Not everything involving the genre (or reality) has to be so serious.

  • Scott says:

It’s funny, but I doubt CBS will win this lawsuit. Granted, the two shows are incredibly similar, but as the judge in the case stated, there’s a reason that competition is allowed within the marketplace. Without competition, you just have monopoly. And as we all know, monopolies are never as fun as they are depicted within the actual board game.

Glass House is a different name and a bit of a different play-style in that the audience gets control over certain elements in the game, whereas in Big Brother, the audience can’t do squat. In Big Brother, the audience just has to sit there while they watch the contestants throw knives in each others’ backs and backstab the heck out of everyone to win. At least on The Glass House, if a guy’s being an idiot on the show, he can campaign all he wants, but the viewing audience will most likely eliminate him anyway. :D

Power to the People, guys. Power to the People.

Dear lord, it’s just a little zing at a competitor. No need to be dour and take things too seriously….sometimes we could all use a little bit of “juvenile” to lighten things up and keep some perspective.

  • K.C. says:

    CBS just won the internet.

  • Donald says:

Dancing on the stars? This kinda wobbles the mind a bit… this might not be the end of this copycat bullcrap. First off, DOTS sounds like something FOX would do knowing their past experiences of copying the other three major networks shows (GREED… The Choice… The Chamber? LOL; thought I was gonna say Skating with Celebrities eh?)

I got so many ideas for new original game shows, how are we all who has ideas can make sure we’re going to the right network?
