Alex Trebek Hospitalized; Expected to Return for July’s “Jeopardy!” Recordings

I’ll preface this by saying everything is as OK as it can be right now, but Alex Trebek’s representatives are reporting that the long time Jeopardy! host was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center yesterday as the result of a minor heart attack.  Trebek’s representatives said he is, “in good spirits and is undergoing further testing.”  He is expected to fully recover and return to the Jeopardy! set for the 29th season’s recordings starting in July.  Jeopardy! won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show last night.  We all wish Alex a speedy recovery.

I am so glad Mr. Trebek is doing better. I’ve had family members who have had heart attacks. So, I know what he and his family are going throughh. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  • Myke25 says:

    Get better soon, Alex.

  • Scott says:

Glad to hear he’s alright. We don’t need another loss in the game show world this year, what with all the other hosts/game show producers that we’ve already lost within the last few months. :(

  • David Michael says:

God Bless, Alex, you have been a class act for a long time, and not just when you work, but also for charities including the USO and World Vision. Glad you are OK, and will be able to return to work next month.

  • glenn says:

Glad he’s ok…quite a scare there…makes me wonder though how much longer he’s going to be hosting. Second health issue in 2 years (Although this makes the Burglar Injury look like a scratch on the arm in comparison). Wonder if he’ll start grooming a successor. I know Dan Patrick has floated his name around on his radio show more than once.

    • DeVares says:

I can see that, glenn. Dan Patrick would be an ideal candidate if and when Trebek retires. Another name I can throw out there is Jeff Probst (assuming his talk show doesn’t make it). He was great on R&RJ! But the ball is in CTD, Sony, & Alex’s corner.

      • Dorvell says:

What about Todd Newton? Or, is he too excitable to be an ideal “Jeopardy!” host? Somehow, I don’t see them going for someone too upbeat.

        • Nick Todor says:

          Or the ever-underrated Pat Kiernan.

          • glenn says:

I agree with Pat Kiernan too bad both his shows were off vehicles (Weakest link wannabe Studio 7 and the World Series of Pop Culture which he didn’t quit fit) That being said…Dunno if he’d leave Time Warner though.

Probst is too tied to Survivor to work.

Todd MAY work but I’d rather see him do wheel

Only wrinkle with Dan Patrick I’d see is would he move to Hollywood. He’s been CT/NY based for over 20 years (Ever since leaving CNN in the late 80s) His radio show is there as is his NBC gig. But since he discussed it himself (and apparently he was a TPIR finalist, thank god he turned down the audition, bad FIT, according to him they even rented a theatre in San Antonio for him to do it in)

  • Lee Hubbard says:

Alex may retire at the end of the 30th season. I’m surprised to see that he will be starting the 29th season. Anyone know what we can expect for that season? (changes in rules, set, etc)

    • Andrew L. Budny says:

I doubt it, the only thing that changes each season is the graphics package they use. Don’t expect any major changes.

      • David Michael says:

Seems like the thing like to use is tournaments to shake things up, so maybe a new theme for a tournament…

        Maybe Watson will return…..

I bet you that there will be a special 30th Anniversary Tournament of Champions, that is too easy to predict ;)

  • James Greek says:

You know Dan Patrick, was asked to auditon for TPIR in 2007 but he turned it down. But I also think that either Marc Summers or Tim Brando audition to become host of J! after Alex retires. I know that Tim Brando was a finalist to succeed Pat after he left daytime WOF to host his late night talk show. But the job eventually went to Rolf Benirschke and we know how that turned out.

  • SEAN says:

Marc Summers sounds good, but so does Dan Patric since he hosted Two Minute Drill on ESPN.

    Get well soon Alex.

  • Anthony Fabio says:

We’ve always talked about who would replace Alex, but I feel that after this heart attack, we have real reason now to start thinking about this. If I’m ever on the show, my hope is that Jeff Probst takes over. He did a fine job with R&R J!. He’s superb on Survivor. He can run the show, and he’s well known enough for people to say “Oh, okay, that makes sense.”

  • Ken in Hong Kong says:

Well, sorry, I’m going to be a dissenting voice here. I’ve never been a Trebek fan. People old enough to remember Art Fleming (the original host of “Jeopardy!”) will say he was never anything but total class — a word not always attributable to Trebek, who used to talk down to contestants.

Pat Kiernan? Yeah, I would vote for that. But before we write off Trebek, remember the health problems Bob Barker had (wasn’t one a mild stroke?), and he returned to host “TPIR” until June 2007 (age 83). Trebek will be 72 on July 22.

  • Dave says:

I’m sorry I couldn’t watch this year’s Daytime Emmys to see Jeopardy! win for best game show but Alex will always be a true game show legend. I even would love to see some different game show hosts to host some updated versions of his classic shows from the past including Concentration with Steve Harvey as the host, and of course a High Rollers revival hosted by Todd Newton as well. What about an updated version of Battlestars hosted by Tom Bergeron or an updated version of Wizard of Odds hosted by Donny Osmond? I would like to see them come back in 2013. Alex thanks for the memories and I’ll hope you’ll recover soon.
