“Dancing With the Stars” Exits GSN’s Schedule Starting April 16th
That didn’t last long, did it? GSN’s most recent attempt at reality shows, exclusive off-network reruns of Dancing With the Stars, are on their way out. The reruns of ABC’s popular dancing game show, which have proved to be anything but popular for GSN, are leaving the network’s schedule starting the week of April 16th. GSN debuted the show on Saturday, January 21st. The debut failed to crack the top 15 most watched shows. First-run reruns averaged 304,000 viewers and has gone down hill since. Most recent figures had the show down to 173,000 viewers on average. Reruns of shows like Family Feud take its place. Click here to visit our Facebook page where we post the full GSN schedules whenever they become available.
I have to say that I’m a bit shocked by this. No, I didn’t expect this to be a long term blockbuster for them, but I expected something at least somewhat decent. I didn’t expect Dancing With the Stars to bomb the way it has, and to vacate the schedule within four months. So can someone at GSN, especially the genius who greenlit the lame reality shows at the recent upfront, realize that people watch for game shows? And that sticking to stuff like the revival of Pyramid is probably for the best?
So, GSN, good luck with Pure Gold and The Family Trade. The people that still watch your network will be waiting for game shows. Like they were here.

I’m, honestly, not surprised AT ALL it bombed the way it did. I AM surprised by how quickly it was removed. I thought they’d stick with it at least a year, no matter how bad the ratings were.
Let’s put it this way: I LOVE “Dancing.” I’m watching the current season right now! With the exception of super unique episodes that I HAD to watch again, even I had no interest in watching the show again. It’s a show that just isn’t too good in reruns. It’s GREAT fresh. It MIGHT be good to air immediately after it airs (like if this current new season aired on GSN in June right after the May finale), but watching an episode from 4 or 5 years ago of a reality show that you know the results to just isn’t appealing.
PLEASE just pick up reruns to “Press Your Luck,” more episodes of “Pyramid,” and more. PLEASE STOP with reality shows! If “Naturally Stoned” didn’t work, nothing will!
My two cents. :)
“Yes” to more Pyramid…some of the $20K’s would be cool to revisit. It’s kinda sad, though, that the answer to every scheduling problem GSN has seems to be to throw more Feud at it. But when it’s all they have, it kinda limits their options.
I agree with Kevin. I’m shocked that GSN has decided to remove it this quickly — less than 3 full months before it came on the schedule. Seeing how they kept Improv-A-Ganza for around 6 months before removing it from the schedule completely, even though it bombed from Episode #1, it made me believe they’d pull the same thing with DWTS and not remove it until September 2012.
Props to GSN for realizing that DWTS has failed miserably in the ratings and that they’d better cut their losses, rather than continuing airing it, and also airing commercials trying to convince everyone that DWTS is a game show.
On the downside, shame on GSN for replacing it with even more Family Feud. Argh. So that’ll make what now? THREE FULL DAYS of Family Feud every week? Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Plus a 2-hour block of Family Feud between 4-6 pm ON EVERY OTHER DAY of the week.
Agh. When they finally do something good, like removing DWTS, they have to do something bad to compensate for that, by bringing in even more of a show that has already been beaten to death on their schedule. Sigh. What will the percentage of Family Feud airings on GSN be now? 75%. :(
Bring back the rest of the G/T library, and quit with the BS policy of leasing 200 episodes or one season of the shows that you do have – people are starting to memorize the episodes of “Pyramid” and “Match Game” by now!
Not to know DWTS or anything like that, but shows like this, AI, or AGT were NOT meant for repeats.
I mean KNOCK!!!
I know this page will eventually be filled with “good riddance” comments (and this should be used as a sign by GSN not to overdue the reality slate, as Alex mentioned), but this is a blow to the network that will cripple getting classics as well as new shows, so let’s not revel too loudly.
On the contrary, we should revel. GSN has jumped the shark, and it just needs to go away. Classics will not return, and any new shows on GSN will be reality shows.
Well, you’re not wrong.
Acquiring DWTS ate up all the money that could have been used for more new episodes of Lingo and other originals, or to acquire more classics.
And, with the woman in charge of the network still looking to throw all their money at the stupid and lame reality shows that were talked about a few weeks back, nothing is really going to get any better, unless you really like Family Feud.
I lost GSN from my cable system last spring, so it dosn’t matter to me if they go under. It was great in the late 90′s and early 00′s, but since then its been downhill. Yet, there is hope for classic game show fans. In my area, and in much of the country, there are nostalga networks like Antenna TV, Me TV & Retro TV. They air programs I haven’t seen in decades. If GSN folds, I’m hoping one of these networks can pick up all the classics GSN used to show. They can be used to fill daytime slots. I’m sure there is as much of an audience for reruns of “I’ve Got a Sercret” as there is for reruns of “Hazel.”
And to think Antenna TV wouldn’t use the damn speed ups and credit crunches, as they don’t even use voice-overs on their shows – they give them the respect that the USA Network did when they aired game shows in the mid 80′s to mid 90′s (including contestant and ticket plugs!)
GSN’s braintrust will rationalize the failure of DWTS as “it’s because it’s a *rerun* of a competition show” and convince themselves that new competition shows will work.
The fact that they duplicate what a dozen other networks do in primetime, further fragmenting the reality/competition audience, will be lost on them until the new shows also do 150,000 viewers (or less).
Then that GSN regime will be fired, a new one will be ushered in, and development will stall again for a couple of years.
Some things GSN should be looking at:
* Overseas game show reruns: they’d be new to the American audience (well, the audience that hasn’t found YouTube), and would serve as backdoor pilots as well — and tell me we wouldn’t be throwing confetti and shouting from the rooftops if GSN announced they’d bought first-in-America runs of “The Chase”, “Deal or No Deal” (UK and Australia), “Pointless”… even “Millionaire Hot Seat”? No, not all at once… but in moderation.
* Low-budget versions of some of those shows — off the top of my head, “Breakaway” could be done on the cheap here (and would work, I think).
* And how about some of the panel shows? Sure, they’d probably fit better on Comedy Central, but that network has its head even further up its (ahem) than GSN does… I’m thinking of shows like “Mock The Week” and “Would I Lie To You” that are comedy framed as a game show.
Let’s face it. The British *are* better than us at this format. Let’s rip them off shamelessly. GSN, literally, has nothing left to lose.
The best news I heard. DWTS is gone. It didn’t last very long on GSN.
I hardly ever watch GSN anymore. Aside from ‘Password Plus’, the ‘Pyramids’, and ‘Super Password’, everything else is crap. You might as well rename GSN, FFSN–where it’s all Family Feud, all the time.
Food Network and A&E are my favorite channels now. ‘Storage Wars’ has become my latest ‘must-see TV’ show. I end up watching FN on Sundays, watching ‘Chopped’, ‘Cupcake Wars’, ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’, ‘Restaurant: Impossible’, and the venerable ‘Iron Chef America’.
Even “Pyramid” is starting to smell these days, as they are playing the same 1985-86 25k Pyramid eps over again for at least the fourth time in THREE years – why not at least rent out some different episodes GSN! We’ll have them memorized soon!
So much for rerun a reality show on a network that is all about “game shows”. Will GSN ever learn a lesson on this? Remember when they aired the Amazing Race back in mid 2000s? They should have the network for the “reality shows” only. Uhhh… I miss Fox Reality.
Good ridDANCE! That’s all I gotta say.
YES! YES!! YES!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dancing is gone from GSN!!!!! I’m not saying that I don’t like when it airs new episodes on ABC because that’s fine with me but Dancing is finally gone from GSN!!!!!!! Now only hope is we get EVERY SINGLE CLASSIC BACK!!!!
GOOD RIDDANCE! DWTS is not on GSN anymore! Lets have more CLASSICS such as…
The Barry/Enright Library
The Jay Wolpert Shows
Cash Cab
Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?
1 vs. 100
The Reg Grundy Library
1998-2002 Episodes of Wheel of Fortune
Season 1 of Wayne Brady’s Let’s Make A Deal
GSN can not show his version of Let’s Make A Deal because CBS doesn’t want it.
Dancing with the Stars might be gone but sorry to say these schedule replacements are horrible. Great shows? YES but overkill? Hell yes!
All of the money GSN has wasted on DWTS and on acquiring even more reality programs is unbelievable. To think that they could have actually used that money wisely for producing new, actual game shows, such as more episodes of 1 VS 100 with Bob Saget.
When you realize how much money GSN wastes on an annual basis, acquiring and producing programs that no one wants to watch, you then understand that the excuses of “…he’s too expensive to hire as a host…” and “…GSN can’t afford a top prize of [X amount] with this show” no longer apply.
Bob’s version of 1 Vs. 100 only had 28 episodes, by the way.
And it should’ve had a ton more, if NBC hadn’t of cancelled it prematurely.
wow, more family feud episodes to take the place of DWTS…just what this network needs.
the inmates are still running the asylum
DWTS gone? That’s the good news. The bad news: Too much Feud. Maybe Flashback Saturdays have a spinoff to Flashback Fridays. That’s my idea.
The network only aired season 4 and 13. Makes me wonder if the results would have been the same, had they started with season 2?
I actually loved dwts being on gsn. I watched season 1. My husband doesn’t like it so I didn’t watch it again till the season with Erin Andrews because we got a DVR. I loved getting to see the Apollo Antone Ohno season I had missed. I was excited about seeing what I hadn’t. Oh well.

I’m disappointed that GSN cancelled DWTS. Hopefully some other cable network will pick it up. Longtime fans of DWTS have been pestering ABC to put the series out on DVDs but instead decided to put it on GSN, which I concede doesn’t really go with the rest of their programming. Talking with fellow fans, nobody gets the GSN channel-many never even heard of it before. I had to google it and then had to get a cable box and add the channel on to my service.
GSN just never did their homework. They started with season 4, showed performance and results shows…so far so good. Then they inexplicably jumped to season 12 which just aired only 1 year ago and ran only the performance shows and just the first hour of some of the results shows. It was really hard to follow along. Season 5 is the one alot of people really want to see again – the introduction of Mark & Derek, Mel’s pairing with Maks, the (continuing) bru-ha-ha over Sabrina’s elimination, etc. The show really ramped up, in my opinion, when Mark & Derek joined the cast. GSN seemed to give up as soon as GSN Host Sherri Shepard was eliminated during this current season. (Boy was it annoying seeing her being pushed during nearly every commercial break!)
To some previous posters, yes, we know who won each season. It’s not about the contest or who won or even about celebs who were barely known till they appeared on the show. It’s about some pretty fantastic dancing. The results shows are where the pro dancers perform full out-some truly amazing performances. Each week as dances are announced, teams tweet youtube videos of past choreography for those dances to compare and discuss. There is a huge interest for this – GSN was just the wrong place I guess. Hope some other channel picks it up, or better yet, put the whole thing on dvd.
Now, what do I do with this cable box!
please bring back dancing with the stars i know it is not a game show but i forgot who won from the past i love reliving past episodes of dwts it is still fun to watch reruns of dwts for me please make room for dwts for me
