Australia’s Seven Looks to Revive “The Price is Right”

We’re starting this week’s updates with a story from Australia.  MediaSpy is reporting that Seven’s now-canceled popular game show The Price is Right (obviously based on the American version) is being eyed up for a revival.  Seven currently airs the long running daily version of Deal or No Deal hosted by Andrew O’Keefe, but its ratings have been shrinking for years.  It is now losing to competing daily game show Millionaire: Hot Seat.  These shows are important to the networks because they provide the lead-in to their 6:00PM news.  They are weighing the options of a primetime version or another daily edition.

Network sources told MediaSpy that no host has been attached to the revival yet, but original host Larry Emdur’s name is being tossed around.  Larry hosted the show from 1993 to 1998, and again from 2003 to 2005.  Larry recently signed a talent deal with Seven to host their morning show as well as other programs.  The show was last seen on Nine Network in 2005.  Nine now airs Millionaire: Hot Seat.  Larry Emdur was recently featured on the CBS version of the show.

Here’s some of the Australian version if you haven’t seen it yet.

Larry was a good host for their version of the show. He hosts a morning show down there now.

  • Pat says:

You know, I actually like that version of TPiR, the whole Mega Showcase kinda hasn’t worked that well for me though, but only cause its such a large amount of money that you really don’t think Price is Right would give away. I would like to see it come back for Australia, but I would like to see a version for America as like a weekend special or something. I actually enjoyed the 1994 New Price is Right (I’m not ashamed to admit it lol), and thought it was a pretty neat idea. But anyway, its Australia keeps the same look and feel, just without the “Higher Lower” bit and replace it with an actual Showcase (both bid on the showcase by lock in pad so there’s no cheating) then go into the Mega Showcase (either the UK version or AUS version) then I really believe that would work.

  • George S. says:

I’d much rather see Larry state side. While I like Drew, I’d probably be more inclined to watch TPiR.
Random thought, if they’re reviving TPiR in Australia, what are the chances that they might revive WoF?

  • H.R. says:

TPiR Australia with Larry, of course in my own opinion, is the best Worldwide spin-off of all International TPiR versions. TPiR ’94 (USA) was a bastardized version of this & the UK version (Bruce’s); like Pat I did enjoy it [TPiR '94] for syndicated version. Larry has been both on set & backstage @ CBS for a number of months, Drew brought Larry on stage to host CLIFF HANGERS for a contestant competing for a trip to Australia (or was the trip in the showcase?, lol). So as a fan this only leads me to believing in this rumor of a revival.

    Loyal friend & true out!

I have to say I’m not terribly surprised, because it’s one of those formats that doesn’t easily disappear. What’s the longest we’ve gone without Feud in the U.S. Three, four years? They usually try Password and Pyramid at least once a decade.

    • H.R. says:

Off topic: but to add on to your point. They also always bring about talks of CARdSHARKS. I await the return…the PROPER RETURN. Dig the name take off!

That’s good news!, A lot of countries has been bringing back Tpir and it has been lasting for a while, I hope The Price is Right Australia comes back with Larry and Shawn Cosgrove. Larry still has it and proved it on Our Version. Our version went downhill with Drew which im not a fan of and George Gray. Maybe this will Cue for another British version as well

Also I’m not really a fan of Millionaire Hot Seat

    • LaJuan says:

Not a fan of George Gray? I’m curious to know why.

      • Ben says:

IMHO, his announcing is OK. Most fans’ problem with him is how they fired a perfectly capable announcer in Rich Fields, and then how George got the job in less-than-savory circumstances.

      • gene says:

I never really cared for him on Weakest Link his style never fitted the show imo. He sounds more like hes parodying an announcer instead of being one. I just want an announcer to announce not try to be funny all the time. And George Gray come on downs annoy me too the way he says it.

Rich Fields was a pretty good announcer, They dint need to replace him imo for a comedian whats next comedy models?

  • jhshifris says:

I’m sorry but Larry’s version is better than Drew’s version is and let’s not forget Ian Turpie who also hosted The Price Is Right down there long before Larry came along.

  • Bobby says:

The Australian Showcase is based first on Double Bullseye (an old pricing game from 1972), and the second half of it inspired Eazy az 1-2-3, although it’s more “Let’s Make a Deal” than Price in its style.

If they revive it, don’t be surprised if the Sounders play a preseason friendly next year in Australia against a Hyundai A-League team, Drew comes over and does one segment. Obviously, Drew’s credentials in FIFA as a photographer is involved here.

  • Dave says:

Wait: “Hot Seat” still exists?! Shocking, in a way.
