“Family Feud”: Pastor’s Wife Gives Us a Spit-Take
Family Feud has given us another moment which I have a feeling will become a viral hit. Have you ever noticed that it’s always the most innocent looking people that give the answers that make your jaw drop? It’s happened quite a bit over the years, and Feud has just produced another. Here’s seemingly innocent Magen, a pastor’s wife. The question is simple: name something you put in your mouth but don’t swallow. Yes, there are some obvious dirty answers. I don’t think anyone ever expected Magen to say what she did. The moment is hysterical, as is Steve’s dance when the answer is revealed. You aren’t going to want to miss this moment. As I’ve said for over a year: Steve Harvey is the best thing that has happened to Family Feud in decades.

I think the show has far too many of these “obvious dirty answer” set-up questions for this sort of thing to be funny any more. Back in 1976 the shock value may have worked, but no longer. Richard Dawson knew exactly how to play it for laughs when this sort of thing happened. Steve just milks it in a very forced and unfunny, obnoxious manner. I don’t find him the least bit humorous.
Agreed, Dave. I have such mixed feelings about this version of Feud. I cannot sit and watch it with my kids…by no means is it family friendly, odd for a show with “family” in the title.
But sometimes, when I watch alone, Steve Harvey has me laughing much like Dawson and Combs did in their day. Oddly, though they were comedians or comic actors, not once did I ever laugh during Anderson’s or Karn’s version.
Steve Harvey is pitching a talk show for 2012-2013…probably leaving Feud to do it. That I think is a shame…if only they could clean it up a little.
You must not watch Family Feud with your “by no means is it family friendly, odd for a show with “family” in the title” comment. It means FAMILIES play against each other. GET A CLUE!! IF you don’t like it, DON’T WATCH IT!!
I think Dave’s off-base. This question and the “Name something that gets bigger as you get older” are questions that have been asked various times since Dawson was hosting. The “obvious” answer has always been there, it’s just now people will actually say it. Off hand, I can think of mouthwash, gum, tobacco and toothpaste. For the latter, stomach and bottom were the two most common answers I remember.
I think the secret to Family Feud’s resurgence is not just the go-there-ness of the contestants, or Steve Harvey’s more in-your-face humor but that anything halfway notable goes onto their official YouTube page. Millions of people watch every day, but tens of millions are using YouTube in the U.S. every day. There must be a staggering number of people who’ve seen a clip on or embedded from YouTube or heard about it, then sought out the show. That’s the only way to explain how it went from low-to-mid 1s from Alex’s previous ratings reports of the end of O’Hurley’s run to the mid 2′s we’re seeing now.
I personally like Steve Harvey, since he’s bringing back the comedic element to the show that was present when Dawson hosted it so many years ago.
O’Hurley…didn’t really care much for him. It was only in the last season that O’Hurley really seemed to let loose and make funny spur-of-the-moment jokes. But by that point, it was too late. I had already lost interest from seeing him host his 1st and 2nd season of it.
Steve Harvey > Funnier than Bill Engvall. Case closed right there.
I’m 23 and a HUGE game show fan, so I LOOK for such clips from game shows…
But I can’t tell you how many of my casual game show watching friends have watched clips of “Family Feud” online and either didn’t know Steve was hosting, laughed out loud at the clip and wanted to watch more…or both of those.
CarShark is absolutely right. Using YouTube is ABSOLUTELY the reason the ratings have increased. There’s no other way to describe it. Yes…Steve is hilarious and is a HUGE reason for it as well. The flow of the show is just more fun now…
But that online push is EXACTLY what’s bringing success…and I love it! :D
Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to say that ALL game shows should see what Family Feud’s done. Millionaire’s done pretty well for themselves with their format change, but they could have put the “Uranus” clip on their official YouTube page, as well. When someone wins big, like the cowboy a little while ago, that should be on their site within a week. Both are hurting for content.
Or like Anthony Anderson’s bit when he did Celebrity “Millionaire” a few weeks ago.
That’s BEGGING for hits online…
I think Steve is awesome in this role..and he is bringing back the humor that was lost in this current era, Karn and O’hurley were great people, but people in part watched Feud back in the day because of both personality..and humor. The difference is that what was shockingly funny back then is nothing anymore because media and society has pushed the envelope very far since then. The questions adjust with the times..like Feud back then, it has g-rated questions, and not so g-rated ones. Steve brings both personality, genuine love for the contestants, and the humor that makes it enjoyable to watch. The producer of Feud now is the same one who worked on the show during the Feud Dawson area, so she knows what works and what doesn’t. Feud has gone retro with both music, set, and comedy, but in a way that is modern and fresh for today’s viewers. I echo earlier sentiments…other game shows should be paying attention to the success Feud has had the last several years..ratings have hit a 2.8 this season..
And with ratings…who knows if that many more people are actually watching, but when filling out diaries or etc., because they watch so many online clips or overall love Harvey’s Feud, they’re more willing to admit and record that and I think THAT’S why the ratings have gone up.
Even if they don’t watch all the time, they can RECALL watching and enjoying “FF”. That’s the key to collecting ratings…
Congrats “Family Feud”!
Funny clip I thought- Steve just has the knack to ad-lib when an answer like that comes up…Thing is, with his talk show coming up, will they let him do both? Will he want to do both?
Hi everyone!
First, THANK YOU to everyone for taking the time to post your comments!
We REALLY appreciate the input from our viewers.
We will take all comments into consideration as we prepare for next season.
Thanks for watching Family Feud!

I saw this last week when it aired. Two thoughts came to mind…that pastor may have looked at his wife and said “Why’d you say THAT on TV?”…and the other thought was that I was glad Steve paid homage to Richard Dawson. I like it when a current host pays homage to the original host.
With that said…I agree with Steve…I was glad it wasn’t up there too.
Steve Harvey can still stay as the “Feud” host while doing a talkshow. They tape all of the episodes in July and August, and that’s where many talkshows are in reruns. If Steve Harvey leaves “Feud” then odds are that “Family Feud” will be canceled.
I hope Steve is with Family Feud for years to come!!! U know if hes getting a talk show next fall then he will continue 2 host the Feud… Hes got so many jobs right now!!! He’s the best!!!
THIS is supposed to be a FAMILY show BUT its not.Questions are geared to sex and imorilaty’
I would NEVER let my family ,which includes all ages ,watch it .COME on CLEAN it up so it would actually be a show Familys could enjoy
A deeply concerned mother

I think Steve is somewhat funny but he goes too far when talking about the contestants’ personal home lives. You can clearly see the embarrassment on the looks of many of their faces. For instance, he told a woman who lives at home with her adult children that her son n law wanted to walk around in his drawers but couldn’t do it because she was living there. He milked it so hard that the woman’s daughter finally said something in rebuttal (which really didn’t make sense what she said) but she was clearly trying to take the pressure & embarrassment off. Our family once considered trying out for the show but changed our minds once he became the host. Too many embarrassing questions.
