Better Than Us: British “Deal or No Deal” is Leaving Me Speechless

I don’t know what’s going on with the British version of Deal or No Deal recently.  First they have Suzanne and the record breaking way she wins the £250,000.  Then we have yesterday’s contestant, Rob, who had possibly one of the most heart breaking moments in game show history.  And today we have contestant Kerry-Anne who has a few record breaking moments of her own.  This game leaves me speechless.  I’ve never seen anyone as gutsy as her play.  Take a look below.

I know many will say she’s crazy, but I applaud her.  That took guts.  She came there to play, she did, and stuff happens.  The same people calling her crazy would be praising her if the game went perfect.  She gave us an unbelievable moment – probably one of the most memorable Deal moments ever – and I don’t know what more you can ask for.  Good for her.  She’s at peace with what happened and kept her spirits up.  Very entertaining game.

    Box 7 strikes yet again…

  • Vinnie says:

Over the last 3 BuzzerVision clips (Suzanne, Rob, this), the 250k is always located at box number 7. Is that just coincidence or is there something else going on?

  • BMSprint says:

I won’t call her crazy, but if I got an offer above the average possibility I would take it. That happens so rarely, particularly in the British version.

    • Frank says:

Especially on UK Deal — the offers always seem to be FAR below the mean value. The previous game saw an 8k deal with the 250k and 15k still active with about nine boxes left. The 100k offer in this game with 10k, 50k and 250k active was a shock in itself.

    • David B says:

Above mean offers should be almost non-existent in the 2-box end game because you’d get better odds down your local casino.

The US Banker put nowhere near as much pressure on his players than the UK one.

Ever seen Dean Cartechini from the Aussie Deal? I think he was crazier… besides the $200,000, the only other case unopened had $5, and he turned down $102,500 to open the big case and win it all. (If I’m not mistaken, in the “open cases/boxes” format, he was the first grand prize winner worldwide, on June 17, 2004, a year and a half before it came to America.)

I’m not speechless about this at all. This is what happens when greed completely consumes a player. They No Deal amazing offers, and then fall flat. That’s all I see here. Greed usually equals failure, and that’s what’s done many a Deal contestant in (especially in the U.S. version). That 140K offer should have been dealt immediately, as I think it was above the average. For me, it was just too good to decline.

I have to call her both crazy and greedy, because she is. She was obviously inspired by Suzanne’s jackpot win, and she wanted a piece of the pie herself. Unfortunately, her extreme greed cost her dearly in the end.

Welcome to the most depressing and uncomfortable week in the history of UK DoND. Grief counsellors are standing by to take your calls.

    Personal quote that applies here…

“Having lots of money is worth more than saying you risked and lost lots of money.”

  • Wayoshi says:

Suzanne had 100k and 250k left at the end, right? That’s a far cry from 10 and 250. Really should have thought it over better.

I am wondering about the #7 thing, though…

I agree with the above comments. That wasn’t guts in the end, that was foolishness. Turning down the 100K was gutsy. Using your Double Dip on the 250K question on Millionaire when you haven’t the foggiest clue would be gutsy. But turning down the 140K was just plain dumb, and at that point I immediately thought it was a dumb decision before even knowing the outcome. Even if she ended up with the 250K, I still would’ve called it a terrible decision.

I’m not going to be an armchair Freud and immediately chalk it up to greed, or call her crazy, or whatever. My reasoning is plain and simple: No Deal there was a sucker bet with a 7.14% house edge. If she wanted to gamble, her odds would’ve been better taking the Deal, then taking 130K of the 140K to a casino and making one or two huge bets on almost any game besides keno.

I really thought for a second there everyone was about to see #4 but what I find interesting is that she was going to save the girl who was holding box 7 til last, talk about a bit of irony. I feel like if she would’ve remembered herself saying that she might have swapped to drop the confetti. Oh well though, I did like her quote at the end saying that she went to play the game and not many people can say that. Me personally, I would’ve taken that 100,000 pound offer and even thought the 250K was sitting on the board there is no way in hell I could have turned down 140K. For me that’s college tuition, a new car, money for my parents, and a small nest egg for when I get out of school. Not my game though :D
